Epidemiologist/Biostatistician

At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving innovative, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.

We are seeking a highly motivated Epidemiologist / Biostatistician (0.6-1 FTE) to join our Reproductive and Perinatal Pharmacoepidemiology Research Group at SAHMRI Women and Kids. The Reproductive and Perinatal Pharmacoepidemiology Research Group seeks to optimise women’s and children’s health through improvements in the quality, safety, and effectiveness of medication use. Our innovative program of research addresses medication use across the reproductive lifespan including contraception, conception, infertility, complications of pregnancy, adverse pregnancy outcomes and lactation.

This role will provide high level analytical support to the Head, Reproductive and Perinatal Pharmacoepidemiology Group, SAHMRI Women and Kids. This position will collect, collate and manage data across a range of projects and use analytical and statistical methods to generate evidence that informs policy and practice related to quality use of medicines and reproductive and perinatal health. With the support and mentorship provided, this role offers the chance to develop professionally in the domains of data science, health research, clinical epidemiology, and more.

About the role
Key responsibilities include:
  • Develop research objectives, protocols and proposals in collaboration with others.
  • Write clearly documented programs in Stata/R to prepare data for analysis (including data cleaning, merging datasets, creating new variables), perform statistical analyses and generate reports.
  • Analyse and interpret the results of own research and generate original ideas based on outcomes.
  • Contribute to high quality research publications in peer-reviewed literature and/or other appropriate forms of research dissemination.
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research.
  • Communicate complex information of a specialist or highly technical nature, orally and in writing.
  • Co-supervision, or where appropriate supervision, of honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of research.
  • Develop productive working relationships with other members of staff.
  • Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
  • Contribute to the process of securing external funding (for example NHMRC or equivalent) and competitive fellowships.
  • Prepare reports and present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising or funding research (for example Steering groups).
  • Proactively support a culture of innovation and excellence that ensures delivery of specific outcomes through a shared sense of purpose with the rest of the team.

About You
The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:
  • Doctoral or Masters level degree in epidemiology/biostatistics or a closely related field
  • Experience working in the area of reproductive and/or perinatal health highly desirable.
  • Analytical skills with the ability to collect, organise, and analyse health related data with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite of products and experience in using analytical software (preference for Stata or R).
  • Experience working with health data collected through primary data collection (e.g. clinical trials and cohort studies) and/or the use of large administrative health datasets.
  • Knowledge of quality use of medicines and health care system in Australia, including primary, secondary, and tertiary care.
  • Demonstrated previous experience and competency in the coordination of research activities and/or management of research projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences, including the ability to prepare high quality reports and papers for publication, and the ability to communicate with diverse research stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.


Special Requirements

  • Some out of business hours work will be required.
  • Some interstate and overseas travel may be required.
  • DCSI Working with Children Check Employment Screening will be required.
  • Primarily located at Flinders Medical Centre with some travel required between SWK sites including SAHMRI at Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
  • SAHMRI is required to implement the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening and vaccination policy for SAHMRI employees carrying out work in any SA Health Facility.
    • Immunisation Risk for this position is Category C (minimal patient contact)
