Assistant Underwriter

Overview:
The Assistant Underwriter supports the daily operations of Special Risk Extension (SRE), processing policy renewals and changes correctly and efficiently in accordance with the Corporation’s underwriting guidelines.

The Assistant Underwriter responds to internal and external enquiries, processes transactions to meet customer needs, provides underwriting support and analysis, and reviews policies to determine if coverage exists for claims.
Responsibilities:
  • Processes scheduled renewals:
    • Assesses and evaluates existing SRE policies to ensure that the risk meets the corporate underwriting standards. When standards are not met, applies appropriate underwriting action.
    • Within established corporate guidelines and individual authority levels, the position exercises full independent underwriting authority on non-complex scheduled renewals, excluding Cargo, Truckmen General Liability, Garage, and Non-Owned Auto renewals.
    • Completes reinsurance Bordereaux as per guidelines.
  • Processes mid-term policy changes:
    • Reviews policies to ensure requests meet the corporate underwriting standards. When standards are not met, applies appropriate underwriting action.
    • Amends policies to reflect requested/accepted changes to existing coverage.
    • Responsible for the administration of letters of brokerage. Provides interpretation of requirements to the brokerage force.
    • Makes decisions and processes all forms of policy endorsements, cancellation and reinstatement requests for non-complex scheduled policies.
    • Completes reinsurance Bordereaux as per guidelines.
  • Responds to enquiries from brokers, adjusters, internal accounting departments, Motor Carrier Division - Safety Program, other MPI staff and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Provides follow-up information as required.
  • Provides assistance to Underwriters and Senior Underwriters.
  • Performs various checks on new applicants as well as drivers and compiles documentation prior to being assigned to an underwriter.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • C11 Principles and Practice of Insurance course from the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) program, General Insurance Essentials Certificate or Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) 2 & 3.
OR
  • Diploma in business administration, commerce or related discipline.
  • Two years of related office or customer service experience.
  • Experience in the insurance industry is an asset.
