The Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Guelph invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in economics with a focus on the themes of "Health, Environment and Well-being" at the Associate or Full Professor level. The CRC Program is one of Canada’s most prestigious Research Chair programs (see more details below). The department welcomes qualified applicants whose work contributes to any aspect of the proposed fields, whether theoretical or empirical. The applicant must have a Ph.D., preferably in economics. Applicants for Tier 1 Chair positions must be full professors or associate professors expecting promotion within two years of the nomination. Alternatively, if they come from outside the academic sector, candidates must possess the qualifications necessary for appointment at these levels.
The successful candidate for a CRC Tier 1 position will be an outstanding and innovative researcher who is recognized internationally and whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their field. The candidate’s proposed research program will be original and innovative at the highest level. The candidate will have a superior publication record and a demonstrated ability to secure competitive research funding, as well as a record of attracting and supervising graduate students. The candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching, mentoring, and supervision at the undergraduate and graduate levels and is expected to develop excellent students and future researchers.
The Department of Economics and Finance (https://www.uoguelph.ca/economics/) is a research-intensive academic unit consisting of 32 faculty members, and offers a range of academic programs leading to the degrees: BA, BComm, MA, and Ph D. The Department is an integral part of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, which has over 4,000 students and offers a wide range of specialized programs in business and economics across undergraduate, graduate, and professional education. The candidate will have an opportunity to create linkages with research clusters across the University of Guelph, including the One Health Institute (https://onehealth.uoguelph.ca/)

Applicants must submit their application online via Econ Job Market (http://Econ Job Market.org). Assessment of applications will begin on July 1, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. The appointment is subject to review and final approval by the Tri-Agency Institutional Programs Secretariat through the CCHRC’s College of Reviewers. Interested applicants should submit:
- A cover letter (optional).
- A summary statement (4 pages maximum) outlining their research program (including how it aligns with the CRC criteria for Tier 1 and how the management of the research program aligns with SSHRC Best Practices in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Research.
- A full CV including names of three references that meet the CRC program’s conflict of interest requirements.
The CRC program is one of Canada’s most prestigious Research Chair programs. This position is associated with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the major federal agency responsible for funding social sciences and humanities research in Canada. A CRC Tier 1 position is tenable for 7 years and is renewable once.
