Maamwesying Ontario Health Team – Cultural Competency and Safety Program Lead

Location: Work Remotely or as required at the Maamwesying Head Office at Serpent River First Nation or the satellite office in Sault Ste. Marie, ON
3 Year Contract Position

The opportunity:
Under the direction of the Maamwesying Ontario Health Director, the Cultural Competency and Safety Program Lead is directly accountable for the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of MOHT Cultural Competency and Safety Program. This role will specialize in decolonizing and communicating Indigenous World Views to promote safety, wellness, and healing for Indigenous patients and families. The Cultural Competency and Safety Program Lead is expected to work proactively and collaboratively with the Transformation Team, Leadership Council, Relative Family Advisory Committee, Working Groups and Sub-Committees and internal and external stakeholders to support the development, implementation, and evaluation of key deliverables and projects.



What you need to bring with you:


  • Post-secondary diploma or undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study
  • Recognized cultural competency and trauma-informed education
  • A minimum of three (3) years recent, related experience in project management as well as facilitating and managing consultation processes involving a wide range of stakeholder groups
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the unique history, cultures, and rights of Indigenous People of Canada
  • Knowledge of Indigenous world view and two-eyed seeing as it relates to well-being
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills to function within a complex interdisciplinary environment, including ability to communicate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft 365 software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook) and Google Drive is required
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s OHT model and local OHT structure/plan (asset)
  • Working knowledge of curriculum development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of First Nation health services, systems, and structures, as well as knowledge of culture, protocols, and traditions for the MOHT attributed population
  • Ability to speak Ojibway an asset
  • Excellent ability to prioritize and organize work and consistently demonstrate initiative to improve processes
  • Must be self-directed, resourceful, and possess critical thinking skills
  • A clear criminal reference check is a condition of employment
  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle and possess a valid driver's license

What to expect? Given the traditional practices of Indigenous people, from time-to-time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines such as tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar may occur.
