Overview:
The Highway Maintenance Worker will be responsible for carrying out highway maintenance tasks, including supervising other workers. This may involve inspecting roads, operating snow plow trucks, performing labor-intensive tasks such as crack sealing, installing signs, removing debris from highways, and fulfilling any other necessary duties

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure adherence to all safe work practices.
  • Complete written administrative information as requested by the superintendent.
  • Report any accidents or incidents that occur while performing work.
  • Service, clean, repair, and maintain equipment.
  • Maintain equipment in accordance with company and safety standards.
  • Establish safe work habits and productive routines.
  • Be prepared to work shifts year-round.

Safety Responsibilities:
  • Review Safe Work Procedures (SWP) and complete Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs).
  • Report incidents and near misses promptly.
  • Understand and follow all safety rules and policies.
  • Be aware of Emergency Response Plans (ERP) and your role within them.
  • Participate actively in safety meetings and investigations related to incidents.
  • Take part in the joint health and safety committee.
  • Complete necessary permits as required.
  • Stay informed about legislative responsibilities.
  • Review audit findings and implement corrective actions.
  • Do not undertake tasks for which you are not trained.
  • Identify and address any safety issues you encounter.

Specific Accountabilities:
  • Inspect highways and assess their conditions.
  • Report any deficiencies to the superintendent.
  • Operate snow plow trucks and loaders to load snowplow trucks.
  • Ensure public safety during work activities.
  • Perform manual tasks, including:
    • Sign repairs
    • Guardrail repairs
    • Removal of road kill
    • Placement of gravel or asphalt
    • Repair of delineators
    • Crack sealing

Training:
Be prepared to be trained in the following programs if not already trained:
  • Employee orientation
  • Operator training
  • Flag training
  • WHIMIS
  • TDG
  • First Aid
  • And any other course that management believes will be applicable to the duties.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two years truck driving experience
  • Class 3 license with air endorsement
  • Experience in operating snow plow trucks on highways is REQUIRED

Shift Schedule:
  • 12-hour shifts, alternating between night and day shifts.
  • Rotation: 84 hours every 2 weeks, 12 months a year.
