Job Synopsis
MCC is the relief, development and peace agency of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches in North America. MCCS staff reflect MCC’s mission, beliefs and values in the workplace and in interactions with individuals, agencies and businesses in the broader community.

The Community Development position is salaried, 0.5 FTE and available on an 18-month term covering a leave starting January 20, 2025 and ending no later than August 31, 2026. The community development programming includes projects with children and youth in a multi-cultural and multi-faith community. This program seeks to build up youth, their families and community; primarily through recreation and skill building activities for at risk youth. Peacebuilding is a critical aspect of this skill development.

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience (fields of social work, child and youth development, education or social justice).

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, spending time in devotions and prayer with all in attendance.
  • Model non-violent peacemaking through daily interactions with staff and the public.
  • Participate in a local church and gatherings, being willing to use his or her gifts within the local faith community.
  • Participate in the development of MCC’s Strategic Plans, together with the MCCS Program Team.
  • Develop and implement an annual budget, monitoring financial statements.
  • Communicate program activities through traditional and emerging tools, including MCCS website, e-newsletters, video, blog, and social media in collaboration with the communications staff.
  • Engage in training and resourcing opportunities to support the role and increase MCCS’s value to the constituency.
  • Maintain organizational relationships with community partners including camps, schools and ministries.
  • Participate in monthly Program Team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Specific Responsibilities (0.5 FTE):
  • Overall
    • Develop, implement, monitor, and report on community development programming.
    • Create and maintain funding streams and partnerships to support youth and sustainable livelihoods programming.
    • Create opportunities for employment and life skills training for newcomer and Indigenous youth.
    • Create opportunities for youth to learn about: trauma, effects of violence and displacement; as well as decolonization in a Saskatchewan context.
    • Incorporate conflict resolution and peacebuilding in all programming for youth.
    • Invite constituents and MCC staff to engage in local programs and projects.
  • Child/Youth Programming
    • Implement protocols that ensure MCC Saskatchewan’s full compliance with the policy PSEAH (Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment and Child Protection) # 7405.
    • Manage the community development project with children and youth in the Meadowgreen area.
    • Facilitate skills building and recreational opportunities, which also teach peacebuilding and conflict resolution, for youth through online and in-person programming (as permitted).
    • Create safe space for youth of diverse backgrounds to come together for relationship building and conversations around racism, discrimination and issues affecting their lives.
    • Deliver direct programming including weekly programs and a summer camp.
    • Manage and supervise a part-time program coordinator and volunteers which includes check-ins, training/equipping and scheduling.
    • Raise funds from external sources and administer current grant funds that support child/youth programming. This includes writing grant applications; tracking expenses; liaising with MCC’s finance department; and reporting to funders on activities, impact and use of funds.
    • Create and maintain relationships with community partners.
    • Communicate work to constituents to promote awareness and raise funds.
    • Learn from newcomer youth to inform MCC’s educational work on issues of migration and displacement, and how to support newcomer work on an ongoing basis.
    • Engage constituents, volunteers, and funders in Meadowgreen programming.

Base salary: $29,785

Additional Information
Contact/Relationships:
The Coordinator will represent the Principles and Practices of MCC in the supporting constituency, to the general public, and to agencies which relate to MCCS. The Coordinator will have ability to establish, sustain and foster relationships within the structures of MCC, in the constituency, and among community partners and other interested populations. Accountability is lodged in the MCCS Program Team. Communication tasks will be done in collaboration with the Communications and Donor Relations staff.

Supervision:
This role includes regularly supervising volunteers, associate and summer staff, and practicum students.

Complexity/Competencies:
The work with children, youth and young adults takes place in multi-cultural and multi-faith contexts. The Coordinator will maintain an awareness of equity issues (race, gender, ethnicity, economics). The Coordinator will keep current understanding of the concepts and practices of community development, experiential learning, and MCC’s PSEAH and Child Protection policy (#7405). S/he will have the ability to analyze and synthesize information to understand issues, and then interpret and communicate complex and sometimes controversial issues to the public with respect and compassion.

Independent Action:
The Coordinator will be responsible for programmatic planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting (PME&R). The Coordinator will be capable of independent judgment and action to achieve outcomes, including responsibility for a flexible work schedule, in the context of Program Team accountability.

End Result:
The MCCS constituency and related communities are engaged in learning and service opportunities related to youth. The Coordinator is well-connected to related constituency and community networks.


Location Description
Saskatchewan has approximately 1.2 million people, with its main office located in Saskatoon, the MCC constituency includes 96 churches, most belonging to Mennonite Church Saskatchewan and the SK Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. Rosthern Junior College, a Mennonite high school is also a part of the constituency.

The MCCS office is in the north industrial area of Saskatoon, named after the saskatoon berry, which is native to the region and is itself derived from the Cree misâskwatômina. Saskatoon is a city of 270,000 which is a service and distribution center supporting the surrounding area with commercial, technical, agricultural, transportation, health, educational, and other public services. The MCCS building accommodates MCC staff, a Material Resource Centre, a gathering place, and the offices of several related organizations.
