About Garth Homer Society
Like so many community-based service providers, the Garth Homer Society got its start through the initiative of families. In 1960, a Victoria mother named Phyllis Sutton formed the Arbutus Arts and Craft Society to meet the needs of her two developmentally disabled adult children and their friends. In 1968, at the urging of community leader Garth Homer, the Executive Director of the Community Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria, Arbutus Arts and Crafts joined with other family-driven groups to develop an activity center for adults with disabilities. Garth passed away in 1976. The Garth Homer Centre, named in his honor, opened in 1977 as the permanent home for the Garth Homer Society – the organization that emerged from the collaboration of the smaller agencies. While the Garth Homer Centre was originally built to house sheltered workshops for crafts, woodworking, chair caning and mail processing, it evolved over the years to meet today’s diverse and complex care needs of adults with developmental disabilities.
Department Overview – Facilities
The facilities team at the Garth Homer Society plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's mission to assist adults with developmental disabilities in leading fulfilling lives. The team is responsible for maintaining the Garth Homer Centre, a central hub where a wide range of day services and programs are provided. This includes activities like cleaning and maintaining the grounds, performing minor repairs, and ensuring the safety and security of the facility. The facilities team ensures the smooth operation of this environment, which is essential for the Society's broader goal of creating a supportive and inclusive community. Their efforts help maintain a space where clients can engage in learning, personal growth, and social interaction, fostering a sense of belonging and community connection.
Skills and Abilities
The position requires maintaining and cleaning various facilities and grounds, including tasks such as vacuuming, washing, stripping, waxing, burnishing, and shampooing floors, as well as cleaning carpets. It involves the collection and disposal of refuse, dusting, wiping, and polishing windows, bathroom fixtures, furniture, and performing spot and accidental cleaning as necessary. The role includes maintaining and cleaning parking lots and sidewalks using hand and powered equipment, removing dirt, leaves, snow, and other refuse, and performing minor gardening tasks such as mowing and trimming lawns. Additionally, the position requires performing minor repairs on plumbing and electrical fixtures, buildings, grounds, and furniture, and changing light bulbs. Arranging furniture and setting up for meetings and events, often for up to 200 people, and maintaining good relationships with tenants are also key responsibilities. Ensuring the security of the facility during duty hours and maintaining various logs, key registers, janitorial supplies, and other records, as well as assisting with inventory, are essential functions. The role demands physical capability to operate cleaning equipment and perform the outlined duties, effective communication with supervisors, staff, clients, and the public, and the ability to organize and perform tasks independently.
