MAiD Response Lead and Ethics Services Engagement Leader

The MAi D Response & Ethics Service Leader, reporting to Senior Leadership and the Ethics Services team, oversees the organization’s response to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAi D) inquiries at Providence Health Care (PHC) by:
  • Developing policies and procedures
  • Creating educational resources
  • Managing complex case coordination
  • Identifying and mitigating organizational risks related to MAi D
  • Ensuring alignment with PHC’s Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Collaborating with the Board and other stakeholder

The MAi D Response & Ethics Service Engagement Leader i
s a key member of Ethics Services, responsible for coordinating communication, educational events, and PHC staff engagement by:
  • Collaborating with clinical ethicists
  • Participating in the development of ethics briefing notes
  • Facilitating organizational ethics consultations
  • Supporting ethics fellow education
  • Leading planning processes for the MAi D response portfolio and Ethics Services
What You Bring:
Education:
  • Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration, Business Administration, Social Work, Clinical Counselling, Nursing, or a related discipline
  • Supplemented by seven (7) to ten (10) years of recent, related experience in progressively senior clinical management/leadership roles within a large academic health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Current registration with the appropriate professional or licensing body, as applicable
Skills:
  • Extensive knowledge of Medical Assistance in Dying legislation, Catholic moral tradition, and ethical issues in a health care setting.
  • Strong understanding of end-of-life medical, psychosocial, and spiritual issues, along with familiarity with PHC and BC health care services.
  • Experience navigating complex clinical and social dynamics, with a focus on collaboration and change management.
  • Proficient in adult education, training design, and excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Skilled in relevant software applications, including Excel and Share Point, and familiarity with clinical information systems.

Your Day to Day

MAi D Response
  • Policy Development: Develops policies and strategies to ensure an integrated and sustainable program that aligns with the organization's vision, values, and strategic direction.
  • Risk Management: Responds to, manages, and mitigates risks related to PHC's MAi D Response, conducting independent risk assessments. Advises the PHC Board, Senior Leadership team, CEO, Providence Living, and Providence Health Society on critical MAi D cases.
  • Operational Framework: Enables an operational framework for clinical and operational teams, fostering collaborative partnerships that support patients, best practices, and improved access to end-of-life services.
  • Practice Support: Provides practice support and team information, including liaison and debriefing around MAi D response case management.
  • Clinical and Educational Programs: Develops, implements, and evaluates clinical and educational programs related to care delivery for those inquiring about or requesting MAi D.
  • Quality Improvement Initiatives: Leads innovative quality improvement initiatives that promote evidence-based best practices across the organization, enhancing value for patients, clinicians, and the public.
  • Leadership and Direction: Provides overall leadership for operational and clinical staff, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and the Health Ethics Guide.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Fosters strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to share knowledge, monitor trends, and identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Communication Planning: Leads strategic communication planning for the program, ensuring consistent messaging both internally and externally. Acts as a liaison between provincial and organizational stakeholders.
  • Reporting: Reports to the Board, Society, and their subcommittees on matters related to MAi D Response, including quality metrics
Ethics Services Engagement
  • Resource Identification: Identifies resources and develops educational opportunities, including "Ethics for Lunch" sessions, the Annual Ethics Conference, biannual Ethics Seminars, and formal clinician training sessions.
  • Planning and Evaluation: Directs planning processes for Ethics Services, including monitoring and evaluating the needs of patients, residents, staff, and volunteers. Collaborates with community resources and program leaders.
  • Project Coordination: Leads project coordination and implements practice changes, while coordinating the reporting and evaluation of MAi D and Ethics Services through data analysis.
  • Research Participation: Participates in ethics research activities, briefing note development, and organizational ethics consultations.
  • Collaboration: Collaborates with various departments and teams to monitor the quality and effectiveness of Ethics Services.
  • Process Improvements: Engages team members in clinical ethics process improvements as requested by the Director.
  • Meetings Representation: Leads and attends internal and external meetings on related matters.
  • Additional Duties: Performs other related duties as required
