Project Lead (Aboriginal Rights and Title)

The Project Lead will serve as the primary liaison between external parties and Seabird Island Band (SIB) in regard to Aboriginal Rights and titles, facilitating all communication and engagement efforts. This role involves planning and arranging meetings between different external stakeholders. The incumbent will provide expertise and support on issues relevant to SIB, representing Seabird’s rights and title at industry and development meetings, and attending various public and community events.
Additionally, they will make presentations, offer advice on rights and title strategies, and ensure timely responses to external stakeholders. The Project Lead will also manage project budgets, track costs, and prepare reports and recommendations for leadership.
This is a 3-year term contract with the possibility of extension.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Act as Project Lead and point of contact for Seabird Island Band (SIB) regarding all correspondence and engagement between external parties and Seabird Island Band.

Represent Seabird’s rights and title at industry and development meetings.

Attend Committee, community and other public meetings and events as required.

Make presentations and provide advice/guidance on Rights and Title related issues and strategies.

Prepares referral compensation budgets based on scope of work and resource requirements.

Tracks project costs to meet budgetary objectives and adjusting project constraints, based on financial analysis.

Prepare and assist in the preparation of reports and recommendations for the Director and stakeholders.

Plan, schedule and arrange any meetings between external parties and SIB’s Chief and Council (whether in-person or by teleconference) including confirming any meeting agenda.
- Provide expertise and support SIB regarding any aboriginal rights and title related issues of importance to SIB’s Chief and Council or the community.
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Director, Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.
- Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
WHAT YOU BRING
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s or graduate degree in in Business Administration, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Law, or a related field. We also recognize and value cultural knowledge and experience gained through other forms of education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers.

Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures,
traditions, and contemporary issues.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Experience interacting with government entities and understanding the regulatory environment impacting Indigenous communities.

Understanding of legal principles related to UNDRIP, land code, and environmental regulations.
- Formal negotiation skills considered an asset.
Preferred:
- Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Lived experience as a member of a First Nations community.

Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.

Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
Cultural Competency:

Deep understanding of First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.

Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
- Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
Working / Special Conditions
- Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.

- Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively engage and support projects, work, and initiatives.
