Robotics and Mechatronics System Designer

FYELABS is seeking an experienced, and highly motivated individual to work as a Mechatronics and Robotics System Designer within FYELABS engineering team. The role involves performing high-level design tasks as outlined by senior FYELABS engineers, including the development of new robotics products, providing technical support for existing designs, and daily operation activities.
About:
FYELABS is a unique service for emerging and ambitious companies. Termed innovation-as-a-service (Iaa S), the FYELABS offering provides a fast-paced and professionally managed product development and problem solution service. It has been operational for about 3 years and has served over 100 companies spread across 5 countries. Typical FYELABS projects run anywhere between 2 weeks and 6 months, with a diverse set of application areas. We are a proud spin-off of Mc Master University and based in Hamilton, ON, Canada.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior engineers to design new products.
  • Provide complete documentation on requirements for new designs (including cost studies, overhead costs, and expected timeline).
  • Coordinate assembly, testing, and calibration procedures with team members.
  • Work closely with outside vendors to complete work in a most efficient manner while keeping production costs down.
  • Provide engineering support on existing products.
  • Utilize technical background to determine what new technologies should be implemented in products to minimize production costs and complexity.
  • Design, build, and test various industrial automation/robotics systems.
  • Maintain technical competency in the area of expertise through reviews of published literature, interaction with academic institutions, peers in professional societies, and peers within the supplier base.
  • Other tasks as deemed necessary.
  • This role is IN-PERSON, in the Hamilton office and remote work is not permitted.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical background and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • The engagement can be part-time, co-op, casual, temporary, or full-time depending on fit.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum third year in Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Mechanical Design: 2-4 years or more
  • Solid Works: 2-4 years or more
  • Industrial Design and DFMA: 2 years or more
  • Firmware Development: 2 years or more
  • Python: 2-4 years or more
  • C/C++: 2-4 years or more
  • Robotics: 2 years or more
  • Data Analysis: 2 years or more
Desired Skills and Attributes:
  • Strong foundation in control systems, motor controls, motor drivers, and actuators.
  • Strong foundation in mechanical design, structural analysis, fatigue analysis, and principles of mechanics.
  • Strong familiarity with ROS and the Linux operating system.
  • Strong foundation in Python and embedded C/C++ for robotics systems.
  • Proficiency in CAD software, with Solid Works being a must.
  • Strong DFMA and inustrial design aptitude, familiarity with traditional and modern manufacturing techniques (e.g., 3D printing, CNC, sheet metal based fabrication etc.).
  • Hands-on experience in building hardware prototypes.
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic system design.
  • Firm understanding of modern sensor technologies (digital and analog sensors).
  • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with Machine Learning projects is nice to have.

  • Primarily full-time positions, but part-time and co-op opportunities are also possible. The candidate must be willing to work from the office in Hamilton, ON.

Salary: $70,000.00-$80,000.00 per year
