Intent of the process
The resulting pool will primarily be used for staffing opportunities of various tenures for the Fraser Stock Assessment Program in the Fraser and Interior Area but it may also be used to staff similar future positions at various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans in the Pacific Region.

Education:
  • Secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (a satisfactory score on the PSC test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience).
Degree equivalency
Experience:
  • Experience in organizing and conducting stock assessments of anadromous salmonids.
  • Experience operating and maintaining field equipment such as boats, motors, vehicles, inflatable rafts, seine nets, and biological sampling and mechanical equipment.
  • Experience in the direction of technical support personnel.

Information on language requirements
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the biology of Pacific Salmon.
  • Knowledge of the field techniques and equipment used to conduct salmonid stock assessments.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to field equipment and field activities.
Abilities and Skills:
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare summary reports using applicable computer software programs such as MS Excel, Access and Word.
  • Ability to organize and safely conduct field programs including the direction of staff.
  • Ability to work effectively independently.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.
  • Effective oral communication skills .
  • Effective written communication skills.

Depending on the position being staffed, any of the asset qualifications may also be deemed as an essential qualification and only candidates and persons with a priority entitlement who possess those qualifications will be considered for that specific vacancy. Education:
  • Successful completion of post secondary training in fisheries or other relevant biological or natural resource science(s).
Degree equivalency
Occupational Certification:
  • Swift Water Rescue Training
  • DFO Jet Boat Training
  • Air Egress Training
  • Possession and acquisition firearms license
  • Bear Awareness Training
  • DFO Non enforcement fire arms training
Experience:
  • Significant* experience in conducting stock assessments of Fraser River salmonids.
  • Recent** experience in conducting stock assessments of Fraser River salmonids.
  • Experience working in remote areas.
  • Experience in the application of acoustic enumeration techniques for assessment of Pacific salmonids.
  • Experience analyzing stock assessments .
  • Experience preparing technical or scientific reports .
  • Experience in working with public and private groups, First Nations, and other government agencies.
  • Experience in data management.
  • Experience in database design.

  • ‘Significant experience’ is understood to mean the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with having performed the full range of activities related to the individual asset qualification.

** ‘Recent ‘is defined as having occurred within the last three years.
Abilities and Skills:
  • Proficient in the operation and maintenance of power driven (jet and propeller) vessels.

Operational Requirements:
  • Annually, up to 5 months of travel time associated with the delivery of field studies, including traveling to and working from remote field locations, for periods of up to 10 weeks at a time.
  • Seasonally working overtime, weekends, shift work and variable hours for continuous durations up to 10 weeks, as required to meet operational needs.
  • Working and living in remote field camps, often under challenging conditions such as inclement weather, with limited amenities for extended periods of time.
  • Working in and around lakes and swiftwater environments.
  • Participation in periods of strenuous physical work, associated with field activities and equipment maintenance.
  • Flying in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.
Conditions of employment
Reliability Status security clearance
  • A valid BC Class 5 driver's licence or equivalent.
  • Health Canada Medical Clearance.
  • Valid first aid certification (minimum level 1 with CPR).
  • Valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
  • Annually, up to 5 months of travel time associated with the delivery of field studies, including traveling to and working from remote field locations, for periods of up to 10 weeks at a time.
  • Seasonally working overtime, weekends, shift work and variable hours for continuous durations up to 10 weeks, as required to meet operational needs.
  • Working and living in remote field camps, often under challenging conditions such as inclement weather, with limited amenities for extended periods of time.
  • Working in and around lakes and swiftwater environments.
  • Participation in periods of strenuous physical work, associated with field activities and equipment maintenance.
  • Flying in helicopters and small fixed-wing aircraft.
  • Attain and maintain certifications as may be required to meet Departmental health and safety standards.
  • All employees of the core public administration are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and attest to their vaccination status unless accommodated based on a medical contraindication, religion, or another prohibited ground for discrimination as defined under the Canadian Human Rights Act.
