Join the SEI Latin America Centre and be part of the Institute’s formal presence in this dynamic region. In 2018, SEI established a permanent base in Latin America by opening an office in Bogota, Colombia. We are looking to continue to build a team of talented and committed environmental and development professionals, which currently exceeds 30 SEI Latin America colleagues, to contribute to the expanding project portfolio within this new centre.
We are looking for a Research Assistant who is committed to supporting research work carried out in pursuit of more sustainable water management to the benefit of human communities and natural ecosystems. Working under the leadership of the SEI Latin America Water Research Team Leader, you will contribute to the development of modelling tools as part of a program entitled Responsibility and Sustainability in Latin American and Caribbean Mining (MARS for its Spanish acronym) funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida). These tools will be used to evaluate the potential water resources impacts of lithium extraction in endoreic watershed/salt flat systems in the Andean Altiplano in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.
Key duties and responsibilities
  • Gather and process hydrologic, hydrogeologic and water use data relevant for the development of analytical tools that will be used to support the project.
  • Contribute to the development of geological characterizations and hydrogeological conceptual models of groundwater dynamics within selected endoreic watershed/salt flat systems in Argentina and Bolivia.
  • Participate in the development of numerical groundwater modelling tools that will be used to represent the subsurface hydrology within selected endoreic watershed in Argentina and Bolivia.
  • Support the organization of activities for stakeholder engagement, capacity building and decisionmaking within public and private institutions that are part of the model co-creation process carried out to support the development of analytical tools deployed as part of the project.
  • Prepare material to disseminate results and build capacity of relevant actors, including reports, scientific articles, communication materials, user guides and manuals, and meeting presentations, among others.
  • Under the supervision of the Water Research Team Leader, potentially support the implementation of other projects with the Latin America Center Water Research Team. This may involve developing, using and transferring analytical tools and participatory process that promote holistic, transparent and robust decisionmaking for planning and management of water systems.
Who you are
You are a geologist, hydrologist, environmental scientist or engineer with a B.S. degree. While your professional experience will likely be limited, you will have studied and carried out academic work related to hydrogeology. You are organized, collaborative, proactive and a problem-solver with a passion for developing new skills. You have excellent communications skills, in both Spanish and English. You should have the ability to work independently to meet deadlines based on workflows defined in collaboration with your supervisor. You should also be able to work in the field – in variable climatic conditions, in remote locations, and under physically demanding circumstances – and travel to different places, both inside and outside of your base in Colombia.
Desired knowledge and experience
  • Knowledge of the hydrologic dynamics of Argentinean or Bolivian salt-flats.
  • Knowledge in geology and hydrogeology, with a focus on the development of geological characterizations and hydrogeological conceptual models.
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems.
  • Experience preparing reports and publications based on field results.
  • Experience in the use of programming tools such as R, MATLAB, Python or others.
  • Experience with groundwater modelling, preferably using MODFLOW, and associated groundwater model development studios such as Visual MODFLOW or similar tools.
What we offer
  • A stimulating, international work environment.
  • A role working towards more sustainable water management in Latin America and beyond.
  • A full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits package at a world-leading environmental research institute.
How to apply
Please submit your application no later than 23 September 2024, 23:59 Stockholm local time. We advise you to apply as soon as possible as applications may be reviewed and interviews conducted on a rolling basis. Applications should be written in English and consist of:
  • Cover letter highlighting relevant qualifications and experience
  • Curriculum vitae.
