PhD scholarship at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)

Copenhagen

FULL TIME

November 7, 2024

Applications are invited for a Ph D scholarship in ‘Ideologies of education and educability with the at the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics The chosen candidate will be employed and enrol at the Faculty of Humanities under the Ph D School at the Faculty of Humanities.

The scholarship is for 3 years starting on 1 April 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. It is connected to the collective research project EDUCABLE: Educational Socialisation in Contemporary Digitalised Societies, funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and directed by Professor Lian Malai Madsen.

The EDUCABLE project takes seriously digital media as social domain in the investigation of educational socialisation. From a linguistic ethnographic approach, the project studies young people’s engagement in digital communities alongside their everyday practice at school and their reflections on educational influences and experiences. Thereby, it explores how digital publics, influencers and alternative schooling communities possibly impact youths’ educational and occupational aspirations, or potentially disrupt assumed connections between social background and education.

The Ph D project will be supervised by Lian Malai Madsen and contribute to the collective project through a focus on ideologies of education and educability. Based primarily on focus group interviews, policy and social media texts, the project should focus on studying how students articulate their experiences with educational guidance and choice, which educational ideologies they express and how these ideologies relate to political and digital public discourses on educability. The aim of the project is to uncover: How do the students directly or indirectly express influence from digital encounters, school and family on their educational choice and future aspirations? How is educability constructed from different ideological perspectives across the different social and communicative domains, possibly in conflicting ways? The attached project proposal should cover how these aims can be met and demonstrate the candidate’s ideas about how to design and carry out the study.
