The Design Workshops are an interdisciplinary department within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts at the German University in Cairo. They currently consist of seven separate workshop units.
The department’s mission is to teach all students practical skills relevant to the majors Graphic, Media and Product Design. Throughout the majors, the workshops are an important resource, where students conduct experiments, realise assignments, create design prototypes, and participate in research.
The Design Workshops contribute to the unique profile of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts as a leader design education in Egypt.

The faculty is searching for a creative professional and recent Arts/Engineering graduate with specialist craft and digital experience to the fill the vacancy as Teaching Assistant in Model-making and Rapid Prototyping Lab. The candidate should be motivated to gain experience within an intercultural academic environment and be willing to develop own profile at the intersection of design, craft and technology.

Job Description:
The Teaching Assistant will collaborate with the Workshop Supervisor in the fields of Model-making and Digital Fabrication in all aspects of workshop management, thereby expanding the capacity, efficiency and creative profile of the lab. He/she will work together with the Workshop Supervisor to guide the students throughout the making process, deliver some modules and assignments relevant to the needs of the students and the faculty and maintain and cultivate the lab as dynamic and innovative facilities for design production.

Responsibilities:

• Assisting and advising students in their project work
• Ensuring each student is following steps correctly and conducting practical demonstration if needed
• Independent teaching of some course/module elements
• Ensuring safety regulations are followed
• Ensuring all equipment is correctly maintained and the workshop is kept clean, tidy and safe
• Maintaining appropriate levels of stock and materials and contacting suppliers
• Assisting in organizational and administrative duties within the department
• Organization of student registrations and their project work for the lab
• Initiating and conducting a personal research project within the workshops that makes innovative use of the available technologies

Qualifications, Experience, Skills:

• A Bachelor degree or demonstrable equivalent experience in a materials, Making/prototyping or engineering related subject which enables the post holder to provide high-level advice to students on technical issues regarding materials, concept, design process, CAD, manufacture, finish, assembly of work/project
• Strong evidence of previous workshop experience that involved experience in teaching, mentoring or demonstrating skills or crafts
• Experience and knowledge within one or more of the following areas:

o General carpentry techniques: joining, laminating, carving • Model making for film, architecture or industrial design
o Digital 3D modeling techniques, CAD, Rhino etc.
o Digitally steered manufacturing techniques such as CNC routing, laser cutting, 3D printing
o Working safely with power tools e.g. circular saw, band saw, upright drill etc.
o CB fabrication including simple programming language is a plus

Additional Desired Skills:

• CAD Skills: Rhinoceros, Fusion 360, Solidworks
• Experience in design for prototype/manufacture
