Masters Thesis - Dynamic simulation software for diesel and battery-electric mining fleets (flexible location)

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is looking for a movitated master student to help improve one of our newest innovative mining software tools: Mine Game. Together with an international team of mining experts, you will validate simulation results against real-world data to identify varations and opportunities for improvement.

Mine Game is a dynamic simulator used to explore the effect of equipment type, fleet size, and mine design on both production and mine infrastructure systems. Mine Game captures equipment interactions and can simulate both diesel and battery-electric vehicle (BEV) equipment from Sandvik load and haul (Lo Ha) and underground drilling (UGD) divisions, and consider automation vs. non-automation cases.

The simulation software is unique to Sandvik and is an important benefit to support equipment sales. Mine Game simulations have been key in many opportunities, particularly for Lo Ha BEV cases.

Opportunity

As the usage of Mine Game within Sandvik and inquiries from the industry increases, the requirement for accurate and realistic simulation results gets more and more important. Through company growth and acquisitions, the number of simulation offerings within Sandvik increased significantly, creating a greater need for effective orchestration.

There is a big drive to validate and improve Mine Game results through field studies and benchmarking of simulations against real machine performances. This validation will increase trust among internal and external stakeholders, thereby boosting buy-in for results.

Your mission

Proactively identify and contact key stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) within Sandvik
Consolidate state-of-art on BEV and diesel technology and power/kinematic calculations & simulation techniques and software
Overview and comparison between Sandvik simulation offerings (Mine Game, VPC, Excel, Deswik.LHS, Polymathian)
In-depth summary of Mine Game simulation
Conceptualize: What can be validated? How to validate simulation results? What needs to be in place and planned for validation?
Perform validation with available data sets or self-driven field tests (e.g. Tampere test mine Finland or Mittersill Austria)
Identify differences between simulation and field results, draw conclusions and investigate parameters which need to be reviewed or tweaked.

Location

You're able to work from home with occasional travel abroad. We prefer to see you located in Germany or Finland, however, other locations is also possible.

Candidate requirements

Master student in Mining Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or similar fields)
Knowledge about vehicle dynamics/kinematics
Proactive and self-driven working style
Drive to get information in wider company organization (identify correct stakeholders, proactively get data, etc.)
Willingness to travel abroad (at least Finland,USA and Canada)
Ability to work fully remotely
Good planning and analytical skills
Interest in mining technologies, especially Battery-electric vehicles, simulation, automation, digitalization
Good interpersonal skills
Advanced computer skills, ideally but not necessarily with 3D design and simulation software
