Applications are invited for a Ph D position at the Hubert Curien Laboratory in Saint Etienne, France, as part of the collaborative European project "CIRCULATING LIGHT ON ANY PHOTONIC PLATFORM". This initiative is committed to advancing the development of next-generation photonics systems, with a particular emphasis on the innovative field of optical circulator fabrication.
The main goal of this Ph D position is to contribute to the development of an integrated magneto-plasmonic circulator. This innovative device will employ magneto-optical (MO) nanoparticle-composite materials and the magneto-biplasmonic (MBP) effect, enabling the full integration of circulators onto any photonic platforms. Essential in telecommunications systems, optical circulators are three ports devices that act as a roundabout for light, with each input port routed to exactly one output port in a nonreciprocal fashion. Such devices, as well as optical isolators, require the use of a MO material compatible with photonic platforms. The project will feature demonstrations on two distinct platforms—In P and Si—operating at wavelengths of 1.3 or 1.5 μm. 7 academic partners and 2 firms are involved in the CIRCULIGHT project.
The Ph D student will play an essential role in the MO material synthesis, and subsequent fabrication of optical devices. With a primary emphasis on material development, she/he will employ the sol-gel technique, exploring various precursors, and magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) collaboratively fabricated within the project. Collaborative work with at least two partners of the consortium, will include devices fabrication, involving short-stays in Eindhoven (and London). Furthermore, complete optical and magneto-optical (MO) characterizations will be conducted at our Hubert Curien laboratory, offering a comprehensive approach to advancing optical circulator technology.

Created in 2006, the Hubert Curien laboratory is a joint research unit (UMR 5516 ) of the Jean Monnet University, Saint-Etienne, the National Research Centre "CNRS" and the Institut d’Optique Graduate School. It is composed of about 240 members who work on scientific topics related to optics, photonics and microwave, computer science, telecom and image.
