Research will cover:

• optimisation of an atrial slice model for acute electrophysiological and mechanical measurements as a novel platform to study atrial tissues and AF
• validation of the model by assessing the preservation of key physiological responses and effects of well-known drugs altering action potential duration
• test of a selection of novel pharmacological compounds in collaboration with Novartis to fight AF Main techniques involved: live tissue slices, the sharp electrode technique and 3D imaging

Qualifications and Requirements:

• self-motivated students who hold an excellent (top 10%) MSc or equivalent in Biology or in disciplines relevant to biomedical research such as Biophysics and Physiology
• research experience in cell/ tissue culture and in electrophysiology is strongly recommended
• a solid background in electrophysiology is highly desired
• scientific curiosity and the desire to actively shape your own research project are a must
• excellent communication skills in English (B2 or higher)
