POST OF TEMPORARY FULL-TIME ASSISTANT PSYCHOLOGIST
CHILDRENS DISABILITY NETWORK TEAM 6 (GALWAY CENTRAL & SOUTH)

The Role:
The Assistant Psychologist position is designed to give experience to a recent graduate with an honours psychology degree (2.1), and generally a post-graduate qualification, who is interested in gaining experience prior to applying for a place on a professional training programme. The person appointed will work at all times under the direct supervision of an experienced psychologist.
The supervising psychologist will ensure that the assistant psychologist has a realistic balance of work, reflecting the person’s qualifications and experience and his or her need to gain relevant new experience. The assistant psychologist will gradually be introduced to work requirements, beginning with relevant reading materials and discussions with the supervisor, then moving to working alongside the supervisor at an agreed level of work. The intensity of supervision will gradually decrease as the assistant psychologist gains confidence and skills.
The assistant psychologist will receive formal supervision in a confidential setting. Overall, the length and amount of supervision will reflect the experience of the assistant psychologist and the balance and amount of work to be done. The supervisor will be responsible for informing and liaising with staff with whom the assistant psychologist is to work. The supervisor will periodically observe the assistant psychologist’s work in order to evaluate the performance.
Every effort will be made to make the kind of experience available to the assistant that will complement the needs of the service and future training goals of the assistant psychologist.

Qualifications/Experience:
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology (2:1 or higher) or related field and a Master’s Degree in Psychology is very desirable. Experience in working in Disability Services is desirable.
A full clean driving licence is an essential requirement of this post.
Skills:
Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to evidence based interventions and the scientist-practitioner model. Candidates must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills so as to effectively share expertise in a timely manner. It is critical that the selected candidate work effectively within a dynamic interdisciplinary team environment using a person and family centred philosophy in line with Family Centred Practice.
Working Hours:
70 hours a fortnight based on a 5 day week. Contracted hours of work are liable to change between the hours of 8am – 8pm over seven days to meet the requirements of the services.
The Brothers of Charity model of service is based on Personal Outcome Measures requiring employees to be flexible in their working hours to provide a quality service delivery for each individual. The Health Service is undergoing ongoing transformation and therefore it is critical that a flexible attitude to changing environments and work requirements is held by the successful candidate.
Salary:
Department of Health 1st January 2024 Psychology Assistant salary scale.
The single point salary scale for the post is - €31,423 pro rata per annum.
Annual Leave:
23 days pro rata per annum.
Tenure:
This post is temporary, full-time and pensionable for a fixed-term period of 12 months.
Location/Travel:
The person appointed must provide his/her own car and must furnish an indemnity from Insurers in favour of the employer. Travelling expenses at the appropriate rate will be paid in respect of travel necessarily performed in the discharge of duty. The travel base for this purpose will be the CDNT 6 Network Base in Woodlands Centre, Renmore, Galway.
Probation:
A probationary period of nine months from the date of appointment applies to the post. The employment may be terminated at any time during the probationary period should the employer find that the appointee is unsuitable to continue employment. The probation period may be extended at the Employer’s discretion.

Staff must treat each person as an individual and at all times acknowledge and respect the rights and personal dignity of the person and his/her family.
Staff are required to establish and maintain relationships with people with disabilities that are based on respect and equality and that promote their independence.
Staff must adhere to the National Quality Standards: Residential Services for People with Disabilities (Health Information and Quality Authority) and Children’s First.
Staff must maintain and further develop their professional competencies via continuous professional development and strive for excellence in their work practices.
Main duties & responsibilities:
The person appointed will/may be asked to carry out some or all of the following tasks under the supervision of the Senior Psychologist:
Co-facilitation of Parent and/or Child intervention groups being run by the CDNT-6.
Undertaking supportive psychotherapeutic work under supervision, of children with disabilities.
Positive Behaviour Support Assessment and Interventions
Multi-Element Intervention plans and associated follow-up.
Screening assessments to determine needs of the children we support (e.g., mental health screening).
Individual and Joint Assessment of children, for example, direct observations, formal psychometric testing, semi-structured interviews, and writing appropriate reports under supervision.
Assisting psychologists to carry out prescribed interventions with individuals or in groups, and writing appropriate reports.
Undertaking supportive work with carers, family members, school staff and other professionals.
Assisting psychologists in delivering training for other professionals.
Promoting psychology services by providing relevant information to referrers, commissioners and others.
Research, audit and service evaluation
Literature searches, developing and maintaining training packs, information leaflets, assessment instruments, and other tasks necessary to the efficient running of the service.
Comply with the service’s policies to ensure the protection and welfare of the people supported by the services.
Comply with the Psychological Society of Ireland’s Ethical Code.
General duties:
Ensure confidentiality in all matters concerning the people supported by the services including the safe storage of reports and records.
Ensure that case notes and reports are completed promptly and co-signed by supervising psychologist and filed in on the child’s file.
Be open to being a reflective practitioner both in clinical practice and in supervision.Be aware of and become familiar with fire drill procedures, i.e. fire detection, evacuation and fire fighting.
Be conscious of Health & Safety matters in the workplace and, in particular, to comply with employees’ obligations as set out under Section 9 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
Ensure that all accidents to the children we support, families and visitors are reported promptly to the Supervising Psychologist.
As the duties and responsibilities of any post in the Service are likely to change with the ongoing needs of the people supported by the services, i.e. age, level of disability, Personal Outcome Measures etc., staff are expected to have a high level of flexibility, and a willingness and an ability to develop new approaches to their work as the people we support needs demand.
Perform such other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned to him/her by the Head of Psychology/Deputy. All duties must be carried out in person at all times.
The role of the post holder will not be limited by reference to this job description. It would be expected that the role will evolve as professional, structural and the people we support demands change and the post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility skills that will facilitate this.
