Job Description
Duration:
Temporary externally funded non Grant-in-Aid contract post, the indicative duration of which is 63 months, subject to contract. A panel may be formed from which future similar vacancies may be filled; such a panel will remain active for a maximum period of 12 months.

Basic Function
Applications are invited for the post of Vista Milk Public Engagement Research Officer. The Public Engagement Research Officer will design, implement and evaluate yearly public engagement and engaged research activities for Vista Milk. By running innovative engaged research activities, the Research Officer will support the active involvement of citizen-consumers and the farming community in Vista Milk research activities.
This is a temporary full time post, the indicative duration of which is approx 5 years. Alternative location(s) of Moorepark, Cork and Ashtown, Dublin may be considered - solely at the discretion of Teagasc management. The Public Engagement Research Officer will be employed to work with the Vista Milk Social and Behavioural Science Team and the Vista Milk Education and Public Engagement Officer.The Research Officer will be a member of the Rural Economy and Development Programme in Teagasc.

Background
The Vista Milk Research Ireland Centre (www.vistamilk.ie), aims to be an agent of growth for the Irish dairy industry by being a world leader in fundamental and translational research for precision pasture-based dairying. Vista Milk represents a unique collaboration between 14 Agri-Food and ICT research institutes and leading Irish/multinational food and ICT companies. The Centre is hosted by Teagasc, the national agency with responsibility for agriculture and food research.
The Centre consists of a Director supported by 11 internationally recognised lead investigators with cutting edge expertise in agriculture, food, sensing, communications, social and behavioural sciences and analytics. The Centre has an exciting research agenda and to deliver on this agenda, over the next 6 years, will hire a total of 162 research staff comprising 3 MSc, 77 Ph D, 64 Post-doctoral researchers, and 20 research assistants. As part of this team, to support Public Engagement and Education activities, an ‘Engaged Research’ programme has been embedded in the Centre. Engaged research involves the use of research approaches and methodologies, often grounded in social and behavioural sciences that aim to support collaborative engagement in a research community and support the translation of research into impact. For example, approaches such as multi-actor approach, participatory exercises, co-design research and quantitative and qualitative research methods will be employed. These approaches will be implemented in a highly applied manner and the Engaged Research Officer will work on various engaged research initiatives including public engagement and science communication initiatives.
The Research Officer will be a member of the Rural Economy and Development Programme (REDP) in Teagasc, working within the Agri-food Business and Spatial Analysis (AFBSA) Department. The mission of REDP is to produce high quality social science research and policy advice to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the Irish Agri-Food sector and to enhance the quality of life in rural Ireland. The AFBSA Department is a recognised centre of expertise for social- and behavioural-science based research and spatial analyses on socio-economic and environmental issues relating to innovation in agriculture, food and the bioeconomy.

Job Objectives
  • Collect and develop resources on public engagement and engaged research methods and identify innovative methods for engaging public audiences in research.
  • Identify and use best practice evaluation methodologies to evaluate the role of engaged research for Vista Milk.
  • Assist in planning and facilitating public engagement exhibitions, events and activities for the Vista Milk Research Centre.
  • Design, collect and analyse quantitative and/or qualitative data collected during public engagement and engaged research activities.
  • Monitor and report on participant engagement, outputs and outcomes from public engagement activities.
  • To assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service Charter and Action Plan.
  • To actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.
  • Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations. This includes full compliance with the responsibilities outlined in the Safety Statement.

Qualifications

  • An honours Level 8 qualification, (as recognised on the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent), in social or behavioural sciences; life sciences; management; communications or journalism; or a related discipline.
  • Candidates must have experience in social & behavioral sciences OR project management OR public engagement.
  • A postgraduate degree and/or research experience in social or behavioral sciences would be a distinct advantage.

Eligibility
This is an open public competition. Should a current serving Teagasc staff member be successful in their application through open public competition for this post, their current contract of employment with Teagasc will come to an end on taking up this post.
