YOUR TEAM
You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where biomedical engineers, biologists, physicists, chemists, biotechnologists, and computational scientists collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research.
The Neuroscience and Smart Materials Research Unit is coordinated by Prof. Fabio Benfenati, who has extensive experience in biomedicine, neurophysiology, and neural interfaces. The research focuses on the neuronal physiopathological mechanisms that lead to diabetic retinopathy.
Despite the evidence that diabetic retinopathy (DR) still remains the first cause of blindness among the working-age population, it lacks a specific preventive treatment. This is due to the fact that early mechanisms leading to the development of DR have been, until recently, unknown. Recent findings have shown that DR is preceded by retinal neurodegeneration focused on retinal ganglion cells. The aim of this project will be to verify whether neurodegeneration could represent a pharmacologic target. A specific therapeutic intervention during this early phase of DR could allow, for the first time, to prevent complications by acting on the initial pathogenetic mechanisms. However, it remains to be clarified whether an early anti-inflammatory or antioxidant therapy (or combination of both) in the course of diabetes is actually able to prevent DR. To this end, the use of molecules of natural origin for their proven tolerability and ability to interact with crucial molecular pathways of inflammation is becoming increasingly interesting. In particular, the proposing group has proven experience in the use of Repron saffron (saffron that naturally has particular concentrations of its constituent molecules such as to provide neuroprotective effects, under patent) as a food supplement for the prevention and mitigation of degeneration of photoreceptors. Retinal dysfunction will be evaluated.
Within the team, your main responsibilities will be:

Contribute to the experiments to test the efficacy of Saffron Repron© in preventing diabetic retinopathy.

This open position is financed by the Ministry of Health/PNRR-Next Generation EU (Project Code: PNRR-MAD-2022-12376008) "Early Retinal Neurodegeneration as Risk Factor, Biomarker and Pharmacological Target of Diabetic Retinopathy" CUP J53C22004130007, admitted to funding by the Ministry of Health for the implementation of Investment 2.1 – Enhancement and strengthening of biomedical research of the NHS – as part of Mission 6 "Health", Component C2 "of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE

A Ph D in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience or similar
Documented experience in Neurophysiology
A strong publication record
The ability to properly report, organize and publish research data
Good command in spoken and written English
