Public Diplomacy/Direct Aid Internship – DFAT – Rabat

About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The Department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About our Internship
The Australian Embassy, Rabat is currently offering an exciting opportunity for interns to join them for three months. The internship is unpaid, but successful candidates will receive a stipend of 2600 MAD per month. The intern assists the Australian Embassy with public diplomacy events and management of its Facebook page, gaining insight and exposure to working within an Embassy. Although the internship will be full-time, the successful candidates can work flexibly to accommodate other study and work commitments.
Other activities include assisting with the administration of DFAT’s Direct Aid Program. This is a small grants scheme awarded to local organisation(s) for the delivery of projects that correspond with the department’s development agenda. Interns will have the opportunity to liaise with grant recipients and assist in managing the projects in accordance with their budget and following appropriate procedures to acquit expenses.
Projects & Tasks
The successful candidates will be engaged across the embassy’s portfolio of work and supervised by the member of staff who leads on the relevant dossier. The key tasks during the internship include but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the publishing and monitoring of the Australian Embassy social media content
  • Respond to questions or comments on social media channels (with direction from the Public Diplomacy Officer)
  • Assist in the implementation of social media campaigns or competitions
  • Assist with event planning and administration
  • Assisting with administration of the Direct Aid Program
  • Other miscellaneous tasks as required
Selection process
We aim to attract high calibre candidates who are currently undertaking or have recently completed an undergraduate or postgraduate university degree. The internship offers a range of experiences and would suit an enthusiastic candidate striving for a career in international relations, policy, events management, marketing or journalism.
The following selection process for this internship programme is in line with the Australian Embassy, Rabat’s standard recruitment process assisted by the HR Section based in the Australian High Commission, London:
  • Advertisement of the vacancy on the Embassy and Regional Recruitment websites
  • Online applications must address selection criteria and submit a short resume
  • In person interview with selection panel


Selection Criteria
In your written statements, you must include relevant high-level examples from your experience that support your claims against the role. The word limit is strictly 250 words per response. The panel will not assess responses which exceed the word limit.

A. What messages about Australia do you think are important to communicate to a Moroccan audience and why?
B. Briefly explain your interest in International Relations and what understanding you have of the work and goals of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
C. Outline your experience of assisting with event coordination, as well as your attention to detail, time management and problem-solving skills.
D. Demonstrate your ability to work effectively across all organisation levels, using effective communication skills to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
E. In providing development assistance to Morocco, what do you think the Australian government’s priorities should be?
