Amsterdam

FULL TIME

Location: Amsterdam

Max salary: 6.148

The Data and Collections Department of the IISH aims to preserve and make accessible information on labor and social movements from various social and political groups and organizations, and the people active in them, in a sustainable way. We do this by acquiring, digitizing, and receiving materials in deposit, but also by advising and sharing our knowledge
We are looking for a professional who can contribute to this in the field of collections and data from and/or regarding Asia. If that is something for you, we invite you to respond to this vacancy.

Collection Development Staff Member Asia (0.8 - 1 fte)

What will you be doing?
You develop a collection development policy for your area and contribute to the general policy. You are aware of the past and present collection practices of the IISG, but also understand where innovation is required and possible. Aware of the importance of increasing diversity and inclusiveness towards the Institute's collections, you will contribute to the development of more participatory working methods. Part of the work also involves advising on sustainable access outside the institute.

Specifically, this means:
  • You actively search for relevant collections and data and explore collaboration opportunities. You respond to offers received by the IISG and are involved in appraising previous acquisitions;
  • You develop and maintain a network of contacts with people and organizations, with correspondents and representatives. You receive collections, make appointments, record information about the collections and collaborate with the other Data and Collections staff members;
  • You have contact with researchers, users and social partners to link collection formation to research programs, user needs and social developments. You will also work actively within the Collection Development department and the larger Data and Collections department and participate in occurring activities;
  • You will contribute to making our work and the IISG collections more widely known by giving presentations, publishing information and sharing your knowledge with third parties.

Where will you be working?
You will work in the Collection Development department, which is responsible for developing and implementing acquisition policy and collection development. The department consists of seven motivated employees and specialists by region and subject. You will work partly independently and partly in a team, reporting to the head of the department.
The department is part of the larger Data and Collections Department, which also includes Collection Processing, Data and Enrichment, and Public Services. Within this department, you will increasingly work together in cross-departmental teams to better align work processes. It is important that you collaborate and coordinate with these, yet to be developed, teams.
You are based in the Netherlands, but will be travelling regularly to Asia to develop and maintain networks and personal contacts.

The collection
We work with analogue and digital sources, on a global scale and over a long time span. Focus areas are labor, industrial relations, economic factors, social inequality and social movements. We work with those who produce the material, such as political groups, trade unions, employers' organizations, NGOs, activists, researchers and online networks and communities. Ensuring sustainable accessibility of information can lead to inclusion in the IISG collection, but also to information being sustainably preserved and accessible elsewhere.
The Asian collections are extensive and diverse, covering traditional parties on the left, socialism and Marxism, the labor movement and related organizations in the 20th centuries, a wide range of social movements, including environmentalism, human rights, resistance movements, LGBT etc. With a few exemptions, the collections are from the post-colonial period. For several years now, we have been active mainly in South-East Asia and focused more on labor relations and a narrower range of themes, adapting our methods to digital born material and trying to document closer to the present in more collaborative ways. The contemporary sources that fit our profile are often produced by ephemeral, web-based groups and networks, not by established organizations with an office and a secretariat. The task is to identify this information and contribute to its sustainable preservation and accessibility.

What do we ask?
  • You have a broad substantive interest in the IISG collection areas and knowledge of recent and current social, economic and political issues and developments in Asia;
  • You have a background in Asian studies or another relevant field related to the humanities and social sciences and have an affinity with scientific research;
  • You have experience in collecting and/or working with collections, and knowledge of the heritage world and archival processes;
  • You are not afraid to make choices and decisions, and accept that these may sometimes lead to disappointing others. You can cope well with peaks in workload;
  • You have extensive digital skills, you are familiar with commonly used software and online tools and media, and have an understanding of digital data formats
  • You have a broad substantive interest in the IISG collection areas and knowledge of recent and current social, economic and political issues and developments in Asia;
  • You are sensitive and respectful in dealing with people and organizations from different backgrounds. Cooperation and consultation come naturally to you. You are motivated to build and maintain good relationships;
  • Proficiency in one or more (Southeast) Asian languages is recommended.
