He angitūtanga | About the role
The Wildlife Crime team at the Department of Conservation are responsible for detecting and preventing the exploitation of protected species. It is an exciting time to join the team as we embark on a phase of strengthening our wildlife compliance and law enforcement activities and capability.
As an Investigations Officer (Wildlife Crime), you will work collaboratively within DOC's Wildlife Crime team to detect and deter wildlife crime, including the smuggling of New Zealand's native species. Working within a specialised team, you'll be at the front line of operational compliance and law enforcement work.

The functions of this role will also include:
  • Investigating breaches of legislation, with a focus on offending under the Wildlife Act and Trade in Endangered Species Act.
  • Preparing enforcement recommendations in response to serious breaches of the Department's legislation.
  • Assisting the Wildlife Crime Team in responding to alerts at the border
  • Working with the Department's Legal and Permissions teams to monitor and investigate breaches of wildlife permits
  • Identifying opportunities to develop information and intelligence sources for current and historic offending, to help inform the Department's response to wildlife crime.
We have two permanent, full-time positions and are recruiting for 1 role based in Auckland and 1 role based in Christchurch.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience of operational enforcement and investigation within a regulatory agency
  • Experience preparing investigation files for prosecution
  • competent in compliance and law enforcement delivery
  • Be self driven and able to work as part of a distributed team
  • full New Zealand driver's licence
Desirable:
  • knowledge of legislation relating to wildlife crime, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) desirable
  • comfortable handling and working with animals

The salary range for this position is $79,656 to $100,639 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
