Legal Support Officer
- 2-year fixed term opportunity * Part time 10-15 hours per week * Wellington based
The Legal Support Officer provides administrative support to MFAT’s Legal Division primarily in the areas of mutual legal assistance, extradition, private international law, and also international treaty-making and research. This is a two-year fixed term opportunity working 10-15 hours per week, suitable for someone currently studying law and looking for an opportunity to apply their theoretical learning in a practical environment.
This role includes, but not limited to;
- Supporting management of cases and issues in the areas of mutual legal assistance, extradition, private international law, and working with relevant legal officers to keep them informed of updates * Managing the register for mutual assistance and extradition requests; * General administrative responsibilities including the preparation of letters and TPNs, receipt and dispatch of documents across our stakeholder groups. * Liaising with overseas posts and relevant departments. * Supporting the Treaty Officer and Treaty Support Officer in the area of international treaty-making * Support formatting, printing and binding treaty and arrangement texts in preparation for signature * Assisting with publication of treaties in the New Zealand Treaty Series and presentation to the House of Representatives * Maintenance and updating of the New Zealand Treaty Archive and New Zealand Treaties Online (www.treaties.mfat.govt.nz) * Support responding to treaty-related enquiries from the public and other government agencies * General legal research and legal assistance for members of Legal Division
The salary for this role is $52,757 pro-rated, inclusive of our 3% Kiwi Saver employer contribution.

- A good understanding of the basic principles of international law – enrolled in Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree * Applicants should be able to demonstrate very close attention to detail. * Strong IT skills including competence in the use of Microsoft Excel.
