Tēnei tūranga - About the Role: Our Policy Advisors support some of the most interesting, complex and high-profile government projects. Working alongside experienced and supportive policy professionals, they develop and apply their public policy skills and experience to deliver results for New Zealand.

They use their strong communication skills to engage and work collaboratively with various groups. They bring a base knowledge of public policy as well as an understanding of the machinery of government and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles to better position New Zealand for the future.

Our Policy Advisors work across different levels to learn from experts and build their own knowledge. With the wide variety of work across the different policy areas, there are numerous opportunities to develop their policy craft and build their careers within MBIE.

About the team and branch:
The purpose of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is to Grow New Zealand for All. Our goal is to create a strong, high-performing, and inclusive economy.
In the year ahead, ESIP will be working on a range of high priority areas critical to supporting the new Government’s employment and Immigration agendas. Together with the Workplace Relations and Safety Policy Branch, we are the lead policy advisors on labour market issues.

The Immigration (Border and Funding) Policy team provides advice on the system setting for Immigration. This includes the legislative settings for the systems, the funding arrangements underpinning the immigration system and the settings for the border.

We are currently working on projects including:
  • The funding arrangements for the immigration system * Reviews of various components of the Immigration Act 2009 * Developing an approach to support MBIE’s stewardship of the immigration system to provide a cohesive view of the immigration system * Progressing various changes to our border settings
The Border and Funding team works alongside two other Immigration Policy teams (Skills and Residence, International and Humanitarian) and the three teams regularly come together to share ideas and discuss key topics. All team members have opportunities to engage with Ministers, industry, and communities. We work closely with a range of other internal and external stakeholders including other policy teams and service delivery arms within MBIE.

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and Experience Required:
We are looking for motivated people with some experience in solving problems logically and formulating high-quality policy advice.

Ideally you will:
  • have a good base of experience in public policy as a Policy Advisor and/or your application demonstrates that you have relevant transferrable skills from an advisory, legal or similar role * have an understanding of the machinery of government and Te Tiriti o Waitangi * be a critical thinker, problem solver and have a healthy level of curiosity * bring knowledge of policy development disciplines and processes * have a good understanding of economic principles and the New Zealand economy * enjoy working on complex problems, generating ideas and coming up with solutions * build relationships with others and work collaboratively * be able to work through ambiguity and deliver results
Why work for us?

Developing our policy staff is a key focus for MBIE. We have a culture where policy staff are empowered to bring fresh perspectives to issues and to think ‘outside the box’. Being the largest ‘policy shop’ in New Zealand, MBIE offers significant opportunity for developing experience across a broad variety of areas. We encourage excellence and proactively support development through on-the-job learning, training courses, conferences and seminars, development programmes, secondments, rotations to other branches and study opportunities.

Ētahi kōrero mō MBIE - About MBIE:
MBIE's goal is to create a resilient and high-performing economy that delivers real and ongoing quality of life for all New Zealanders.

Our aspirations are echoed in our Māori identity – Hīkina Whakatutuki – which broadly means ‘lifting to make successful'.

MBIE recognises the partnership founded under Te Tiriti o Waitangi between Māori and the Crown and is committed to giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We will do this through enduring, meaningful and effective partnerships with iwi, Māori, other Māori groups/organisations and the Crown, as this is critical to enable economic and social development, both for Māori and for wider Aotearoa New Zealand. We are committed to continuing to partner with iwi in order to find new sustainable solutions to address long standing systemic and cross-cutting issues facing Māori and wider Aotearoa New Zealand and we are also committed to identifying opportunities for iwi to lead and creating an enabling environment for iwi to leverage these opportunities.
