He angitūtanga | About the role
Are you a science whiz that enjoys getting out into nature? How would you like to be immersed in te taiao, whilst directly contributing to conservation outcomes for Aotearoa?
As Science Technician, you will support Te Papa Atawhai DOC's biodiversity research programme by working on a project assessing the relative efficacy of traps used to control feral cats. You will join the team responsible for how we deliver ecological outcomes and pest control across the whole of Aotearoa.

The position will be focussed on:

• Supporting DOC Operations staff with setting and checking trail cameras deployed to monitor feral cat traps
• Watching trail camera video footage of the traps in operation
• Collating and analysing scientific data, producing insights and recommendations to Operations staff
• Provide scientific reports and technical advice to relevant internal and external stakeholders

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you:

• Relevant post graduate qualification, or equivalent knowledge, and relevant science experience
• Practical experience in the field and backcountry, including orienteering, map reading and GPS skills
• Experience in the design and management of research investigations
• Understanding of the application of statistical methods, and of modelling in the design of research programmes and analysis of results would be beneficial.
• Strong planning and organisation skills, management of resources over a programme of work to meet timeframes and budget
• Solid communication skills, able to produce scientific outputs and technical advise to a professional standard
• Understanding of the importance and responsibilities of Māori Crown relationships, experience of working within a Te Ao Māori practice is desirable.
• Health and safety focus and current first aid certificate would be beneficial.
• Full NZ Drivers License

The Landscape Threats Science Team are part of the Terrestrial Biodiversity Unit, which work collectively with the Biodiversity System and Aquatic Directorate with the aim of achieving agreed biodiversity outcomes through leading an evidence-based system view of biodiversity, implemented through partnership.

The salary range for this position is $68,535 - $86,423 pro-rata with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
