Solicitor or Associate - Class Actions
Auckland
FULL TIME & PART TIME

The Opportunity
Shine has a reputation as a leader in plaintiff civil litigation in New Zealand. Our dedicated team delivers justice for our clients who have suffered losses, whether an insurance dispute, building defect dispute, earthquake claim, abuse law, class action, employment matter, estate litigation, relationship property issue or general civil litigation. We have seen an organic increase in actions brought by plaintiffs and, consequently require a “go-getter” to join our vibrant team.
Permanently based in Auckland, this is an excellent opportunity for an Associate with experience contributing to the success of our General Civil Litigation practice, or for a Solicitor seeking to step up into an Associate position.
Whether you’ve come from defendant or plaintiff practice, you will have the opportunity to take a leading role on a volume of class actions, both filed and in investigation. We are proud to hold a portfolio of class actions including, but not limited to, product liability, natural disaster, environmental, general insurance, and social justice-based class actions. With mentorship from an experienced Legal Practice Manager, you will have an ideal balance of autonomy and guidance.
While this is a full-time opportunity, we are open to offering flexible work arrangement options, including work from home options once established, and part-time with a minimum of 4 days per week for the right candidate.
With empathy, adaptability and initiative, you will be a true champion of our clients by:
- Assisting in class action investigations including drafting memoranda, briefs, correspondence and court documents
- Assisting in the preparation of pleadings.
- Undertaking research, participating in discovery reviews.
- Cultivating strong relationships with our clients, peers and other stakeholders through exceptional communication and clear management of expectations.
- Providing the representation our clients need and deserve to obtain maximum compensation efficiently.
- Cultivating strong relationships with our clients, peers and other stakeholders through exceptional communication and clear management of expectations.
- Drafting legal documents in a concise and effective manner.
- Interpreting legal advice to each client's particular case to suit their level of understanding.
- Being commercially responsible and fiscally aware, in relation to running files. Effectively assessing claims including liability and quantum.
- Practising experience in general civil litigation and/or commercial litigation is desirable but not essential for success.
- Valid or ability to obtain current New Zealand practising certificate.
- Maturity to work with clients, senior and junior counsel and expert witnesses.
- Strong attention to detail and effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Passionate, motivated and enthusiastic individual.
At Shine, purpose really matters.
- It’s our clients, who summon the courage to stand up to injustice.
- It’s the communities we are part of and support every day.
- It’s our team, who champion what’s right and make this place what it is.
Here are some of the things we hope you’ll love about working with us:
- Connect and be you: Get the benefits you need, and work with truly authentic people. And you can enjoy the security of a large, well-established firm that treats you as a person, not a number.
- Challenge and be challenged: We’re not here for “easy”. We want you to take your place at Shine and make a real impact. Question and challenge - that’s how we grow.
- Achieve and grow: Start your Shine journey with our in-house learning programs, where you’ll find immediate connection and be set up for success. You will be provided real opportunities to step up and grow - within your role and beyond.
Excited to join us and stand up to injustice? Apply now and make Shine Justice a place for you.
As part of The Circle Back Initiative, we want you to feel supported through our recruitment process, which means that you will hear back from our friendly team – no matter the outcome.
We are committed to making Shine Lawyers a place for you by encouraging and supporting our people to bring their authentic selves to the workplace, and as a result, we know you’ll put your best self forward while righting wrong for our clients. We’re passionate about maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment here at Shine that celebrates all of our differences with age, disability, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, to name a few. You bring you .
