The National Public Health Service (NPHS) within Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, work towards Pae Ora (healthy futures) for all by engaging with the wider determinants that impact people's health, focusing on oranga/wellbeing, prevention, protection, and population-level intervention. We are connected across boundaries to deliver public health services that are nationally planned, regionally delivered and locally tailored.
We have a permanent, full-time opportunity available to join our Central regional team as a Vision Hearing Technician. The primary purpose of this role is to maintain and improve the Vision and Hearing status of children in the Central region through the provision of the National Vision and Hearing Screening programme. You will provide a quality vision and hearing screening service to early childhood and school aged children ages 4 – 18 years. This role will also see you provide Tympanometry and Audiometry screening services to children aged 12 months to 18 years.
Although the role is based in Palmerston North, it is a whole of district role, and therefore travel is required. In addition, on some occasions the role may be required to support other districts, with appropriate orientation. As service models develop, after hours duties may become incorporated into the role.
Mōu | About you
You are an experienced Vision and Hearing technician able to relate well with children and their families. You have a strong interest in child health and are able to advocate for children and the families of those who access the Vision and Hearing Screening Service. You're able to provide appropriate health education and vision and hearing related health issues and maintain accurate client records.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Experienced Vision and Hearing Technician with a background in health and/or education
- A current full New Zealand drivers' licence
- Working knowledge of MS Office programmes
- Able to meet the organizational requirements for working with children
- Experience with working with a wide range of cultures
- Demonstrated mature communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write and present in a clear, persuasive, and impactful way, to influence others to embrace change, and to develop, unify and maintain strong internal and external relationships essential for achieving sustainable outcomes
- A commitment to being a good Te Tiriti partner in all your actions. This includes an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the ability to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in this role
- Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth
