Job Description/Requirements
Who We Are

Girl Effect is an international non-profit that builds media that girls want, trust and need. From chatbots to chat shows and TV dramas to tech, our content helps adolescent girls in Africa and Asia make choices and changes in their lives. We create safe spaces for girls, sharing facts and answering questions about health, nutrition, education, and relationships, empowering girls with the skills to negotiate and redefine what they are told is possible "for a girl".

Our reach is 50 million and counting. And we're using technology to reach girls at scale so every girl can choose to be in control of her body, her health, her learning and her livelihood.

Because when a girl unlocks her power to make different choices that change her life, it inspires others to do so too. She starts a ripple effect that impacts her family, community, and country.

That's the Girl Effect.

Girl Effect in Nigeria

Girl Effect's goal is to inspire over 10 million girls and young women in Nigeria to defy gender norms and take control of their futures. Girl Effect has been piloting different approaches to change in Nigeria for the last ten years.

In 2014, we developed a mobile platform that trains young women to become technology-enabled girl ambassadors to conduct peer-to-peer research in some of the hardest-to-reach communities in Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, and Kano states. We also launched a zero-rated online mobile platform—available on the web and social media—called Springster. Providing entertaining content written by girls, for girls, Springster gave users access to an a-z of everything they needed to know to thrive — in English and Hausa. We learned we can use digital channels to engage girls at scale in Nigeria and that there's a real thirst for honest, authentic content related to topics that girls are too scared to talk to their friends and family about.

In 2021, we partnered with Meta to use Instagram and Facebook to deliver social behaviour change communication campaigns designed to tackle myths around Covid and the Covid vaccine, working with influencers like Taaooma and Kate Henshaw to break through the clutter to reach more than 9m people.

Our aim over the next few years is to reach youth in Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo, Kaduna, and Delta states in Nigeria, creating sustainable impact at scale and building scalable and long-lasting impact for girls and their communities in Nigeria.

What You'll Do

Girl Effect Nigeria is in the process of identifying Creative individuals who will support and shape the production and growth of our content in Nigeria over the next two years. To support our current and future programming at Girl Effect Nigeria, we need to be agile in collaborating with multiple experts who can use our expertise in social and behavior change communication as a springboard for creating compelling and engaging content for young audiences.

We want to create a roster of known creative individuals we have vetted and can call upon when relevant and aligned projects arise at Girl Effect Nigeria. We would like to work with

  • Copywriter: Write clear, compelling, social behaviour change copy for various mediums (e.g. ads, blog posts, social media creatives, short-form scripts, radio spots/dramas, newsletters).
  • Video/Content Editor: Develop animated sequences, motion graphics, or visual effects that enhance the storytelling and visual appeal of the campaign videos. Utilize 2D or 3D animation techniques to bring key concepts to life.
  • Photographers/Videographers: Capture picture and video content across all GE Nigeria content/assets needs; campaign shoots, stock image development, site visits, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Translators: Translate all relevant messaging and content into three key languages, Yoruba, Hausa and Pidgin English.
  • Social Media Manager: Manage GEN brands' social media accounts across (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tik Tok).

If you work in the creative industry and are passionate about unlocking the power of girls, then we would like to work with you.

We believe that building steady creative partnerships will reduce the time spent on administrative processes such as agency identification, onboarding, and due diligence, giving us all more time to focus on building great products and great content.

How Will It Work?

We do not expect one applicant to fulfil all our criteria, but we welcome applications from individuals who can help us understand how their experience, knowledge, and skills could enable us to reach our objectives around unlocking change for young people through media and tech.

We are extending the opportunity for you to potentially join our Create roster on a retainer contract for one to two years, with agreed-upon rates. This positions you to become an integral part of the team, playing a crucial role in creating a better world for girls.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure you send in your submissions and register using this link. Consultants must be available from October 2024 and be able to jump onto projects with a lead time of no more than 2 weeks. The Girl Effect team will provide a clear brief for pieces of work based on an agreed-upon template, for which the vendor will propose the number of days required for completion.
