Radiation Safety Officer Job Description
This position acts as the principal technical resource of Zadie Clinic (ZC) on radiation safety. The Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) is certified by an accredited training center in the State of Qatar to comply with the ALARA standard. Advises the management on strategies and tactics relating to the technical and regulatory direction of the radiation safety program. Develops, plans, coordinates, and manages radiation safety programs, including the implementation of those programs to ensure the safety of the patients, their family members, the medical workforce, and visitors. Demands strict compliance in regard to radiation safety within the entire premises of the medical facility.
Job Description:

• Implements safety measures such as monitoring radiation exposure levels on a regular basis to ensure that they do not exceed regulatory limits.
• Ensures that staff members are aware of new developments in radiation safety practices and technology.
• Performs tests to measure staff exposure to radiation using monitors or dosimeters worn by workers or devices placed in the workplace.
• Ensures that the personnel monitoring devices are used and exchanged at the proper intervals, and records of the results of such monitoring are maintained.
• Conducts radiation safety training courses for staff members who are exposed to radiation or radioactive equipment.
• Designs and implements safety programs that educate workers about radiation hazards and how to avoid them.
• Monitors equipment to ensure that it is functioning properly and maintains logbooks of all readings. Liaises with the manufacturer to address irregularities and routine maintenance.
• Inspects work sites for potential hazards related to radiation exposure such as improper shielding of x-ray machines, improperly stored radioactive materials, worn or bad condition of the lead apron for patients, etc.
• Investigates accidents or incidents involving radiation exposure to ensure that proper safety procedures were followed, and protocols were in place.
• Investigates and reports any instances where radiation exposure was over and beyond the maximum acceptable levels.
• The RSO provides Waste Management oversight to ensure the safe handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste according to regulatory requirements. This includes maintaining accurate records of waste disposal activities, a key part of demonstrating compliance and ensuring environmental protection.
• Conducts Risk Assessment and Control to evaluate the potential risks associated with existing and proposed uses of radioactive materials and radiation-generating equipment. This involves implementing control measures to mitigate identified risks and prioritizing safety in all operations involving radiation.
• Ensures Equipment and Facility Safety through the maintenance and calibration of radiation-producing equipment and the assessment of facilities using radioactive materials. This ensures that equipment operates safely and efficiently, and that facility designs and safety features meet the required radiation protection standards, minimizing risks to workers and the public.
• Collaborates with the Medical Director and other medical team members to initiate improvement in clinical operation and administration.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer (highly preferred); and/or DRSO/GRSO Training Certificate; or DHP licensed General Nurse with Radiation Protection Course Certificate, and License to Work in Radiation Field (preferred)
• Bachelor's degree in related fields, such as physics, engineering, or environmental science
• OSLD Badge
• Medical Fitness Certificate
• 5+ years of experience in radiation safety or a related field
• Strong understanding of state and federal regulations and guidelines for radiation safety
• Extensive experience in radiation safety management
• Familiarity with regulatory agencies and compliance requirements
• Experience with radioactive waste management
