About the Role
The Straits Times interactive graphics team is looking for a creative Digital Graphics Designer to join our team in the newsroom. You would be working alongside journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers. Responsibilities
- Collaborate with journalists and data visualisation developers to understand requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle or product request
- Assist in designing, illustrating and prototyping data visualisations, visual stories, social media assets using various tools and technologies
- Collaborate with the UX team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices.
- Help to document the design process, including any issues or challenges encountered during the design stages
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
- Carry out investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including conducting interviews and finding/verifying data sources
- Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling
- Manage workflow and process for data-driven stories in the newsroom
- Thoroughly test and troubleshoot interactive graphics to ensure functionality and performance standards are met.
- The ideal candidate will be proficient in: Figma, Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects), HTML, CSS and Java Script (d3.js, Web GL and Svelte are a plus).
- Proficiency in industry-standard 3D modelling and rendering software and familiarity with 2D illustration.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., Arc GIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualisation platforms are a plus.
- Experience with augmented reality (AR) design is a plus.
- Excellent creative and artistic abilities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, accurate work.
- Familiarity with the news industry and an interest in current events.
- Experience in managing time effectively to meet deadlines in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining the quality of work.
- Prior experience in a data visualisation role / visual storytelling will be preferred
