OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The School of the Arts: Drama at the University of Pretoria seeks a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Interdisciplinary Performance Praxis. The post engages with key academic and creative areas related to performance as well as radical futures of performance in the broader field of the humanities. This includes actively seeking out collaborative encounters, intersections and fissures within and between artistic disciplines. Furthermore, the role seeks engagement with artistic research methodologies to interrogate past and present approaches to performance in relation to critical cultural, societal, political and/or environmental questions. The successful candidate will contribute to the School’s vision to serve as a prominent academic hub in South Africa, fostering exceptional researchers, prolific creative minds, and celebrated performing artists.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide theoretical and practical teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in at least two of the following areas: Writing, Performance, Digital Media, Directing and Theatre-Making, Scenography, and Drama and Film Studies.
- Undertake academic administration and other duties as determined by the Departmental Chair and/or the Head of the School of the Arts.
- Be involved in module and curriculum development.
- Contribute creative research outputs and scholarly publications.
- Supervise creative projects at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Supervise postgraduate research at the appropriate level.
- Participate in the School of the Arts’ and the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, and community engagement.
- Liaise with relevant stakeholders within and outside the Faculty of Humanities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
LECTURER
- A Master’s degree in Drama/Theatre/Performance Studies, or a related field;
- A portfolio of professional creative work;
- Accredited research outputs appropriate to the post level
- The equivalent of two (2) years of tertiary teaching or tutoring experience. This may include block and/or temporary teaching.
- A Doctoral degree in Drama/Theatre/Performance Studies, or a related field;
- A portfolio of professional creative work;
- At least five (5) years of tertiary teaching experience;
- Evidence of successful design and implementation of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- Proven supervision to completion of at least two (2) master’s students;
- Accredited research outputs (publications, conference papers) appropriate to the post level
- In-depth theoretical and experiential knowledge of interdisciplinary performance praxis
- Appropriate skills to conceptualise and initiate radical futures of performance in the arts and humanities
- Appropriate skills to engage with artistic research methodologies
- Appropriate language and communication skills
- Appropriate computer skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Appropriate professional experience
- Administrative competence
- A strong work ethic
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
LECTURER:
- Three years’ appropriate teaching experience at tertiary level
- A Ph D in Drama/Theatre/Performance studies, or a related field
- Experience in supervising creative work at postgraduate level
- Experience in postgraduate research supervision
- Experience in artistic inter- and trans-disciplinary research methodologies
- Experience in postgraduate supervision at doctoral level
- Advanced training in embodied performance pedagogies (such as but not limited to Lessac Kinesensics or Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies)
- Experience in inter- and transdisciplinary curriculum development
- Experience in academic administration
- A professional award for creative work

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of
appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and
UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
