Your role and responsibilities

ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. The pilot plant, which is spread over four floors, uses ABB Ability™ System 800x A® for distributed process control and over 250 instruments, measuring temperature, pressure, carbon dioxide and flow. The goal is to develop a dynamic simulator for this pilot carbon capture plant, incorporating both the chemical process and control systems. The simulator must be integrated with a distributed control system (DCS) to ensure stable operation. The final simulator will be tested and validated using real data collected from the pilot plant. Details: • Start in January/February 2025 for a duration of 5 months • 30 ECTS per student • 1-2 students • On site at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås – ABB may cover the accommodation Research topics: • The thesis will focus on developing a dynamic process simulator of carbon capture pilot plant of ABB at Imperial College London Goals: • Develop a dynamic simulator of a carbon capture plant • Investigate the context and user needs or requirement for setting up the industrial control platform (ABB System 800x A) for this pilot plant • Test and validate the simulator against real data Approach: The work will address the following points: • Be involved in developing a process simulator of: - Carbon capture unit - ABB system 800x A (modeling, monitoring, control) • Model parameter tuning + simulator validation • Analyze results and draw conclusions

Qualifications for the role

• Drive and interest to work with real-world use cases
• Background in chemical engineering, control and systems engineering, or similar disciplines
• Interested in process modeling and simulation
• Experience with modeling platforms like Aspen Plus is a bonus
• Motivated to setup a lab scale PA setup integrated with ABB system 800x A
• Motivated to implement classic and advanced control system in an industrial platform
• Basic knowledge of distributed control systems
• Knowledge about industrial networks is a plus
• Good soft skills and collaborative spirit
