The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Locum Consultant Spinal Oncology Surgeon

Northfield

FULL TIME

September 19, 2024

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications from orthopaedic surgeons or neurosurgeons to the position of Locum Consultant Spinal Oncology Surgeon , to ensure the Trust can continue to provide high quality and timely care for its patients, offering a comprehensive range of spinal surgery.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a surgeon wishing to pursue a career dedicated to spinal oncology surgery within an internationally renowned centre. The post holder will be committed to spinal oncology, ideally with an emphasis on primary spinal oncology. The department is fortunate to receive both adult and paediatric primary tumour referrals, as well as complex spinal metastatic referrals, from throughout the United Kingdom and is able to provide treatment with a full array of modern equipment including intra operative 3D imaging and navigation.

The Trust provides treatment for all types of spinal conditions, such as spinal injuries, spinal tumours, degenerative conditions such as slipped discs, children's spinal conditions such as scoliosis and other conditions affecting the spine. It also provides surgery to all areas of the spine, including cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral.

The on-call rota includes 10 of the 12 surgeons and runs 24 hours a day. The on-call referrals are managed through an electronic referral system (Refer APatient) in line with regional and national guidelines and include secondary, tertiary, and quaternary level referrals. Poly-trauma in the West Midlands region is in line with the Trauma Networks which are managed by regional Major Trauma Centres. Mono-trauma to the spine can be referred to The ROH for ongoing management. This is less frequent that poly-trauma. Trauma is managed in line with Regional Spinal Network (RSN) guidelines. The spinal on-call rota is separate to the rest of the hospital and does not cover orthopaedic patients with non-spinal conditions.

The department undertakes a very comprehensive range of spinal surgical procedures throughout the spine including different approaches to the spine. We have access to modern facilities including operative beds, microscopes, intra operative 3D imaging, navigation, and spinal endoscopy equipment. The post holder will be joining several colleagues with a predominantly oncology focus to make the most of these facilities for the betterment of patient care.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest specialist orthopaedic units in Europe. We offer planned orthopaedic surgery to people locally, nationally and internationally.

Our Trust is a very special hospital; big enough to deliver world class services and small enough to offer exceptional patient and staff experience. We offer a working experience unique in the West Midlands and we're always on the lookout for passionate people to join our award-winning team.

The ROH is an equal opportunities employer. We employ people of difference and are committed to growing an inclusive culture, where difference is celebrated, and people feel able to bring their whole and authentic self to work.

We are a Disability Confident Leader and offer a range of inclusive, family friendly and flexible working arrangements and policies, to support our people in the workplace. Flexible working requests will be considered.

The Trust is committed to the Disability Confident Interview Scheme and will offer an interview to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a vacancy and consider them on their abilities.

If you have a disability and need any support with your application or require any reasonable adjustments to be implemented please do get in touch with the Recruiting Manager for this position so that the team can support you.

The post is expected to attract 10 PAs with an on-call commitment of approximately 1:11 providing emergency routine spinal care to Birmingham and Worcestershire, and beyond.

The Consultant’s within the spinal services team are highly specialized in spinal surgery and each are Fellowship trained. Spinal Consultants are all also heavily involved in research and education, often giving talks and lectures internationally themselves, as well as receiving and developing further training. For this post an emphasis and interest in spinal oncology is essential.

The successful candidate will have completed orthopaedic/neurosurgical training and hold FRCS(Orth) or FRCS(SN), be entered on the Specialist Register or within 3 months of this and have successfully completed (or is completing) a recognized spinal fellowship. They will hold a logbook and a working knowledge of spinal operating commensurate with that. Clear evidence of longstanding commitment to a career in spinal surgery is mandatory. This is for a fixed 12-month locum post to increase capacity.

A weekly MDT meeting is held to review all spinal oncology cases. The MDT consists of a group of medical experts from all areas of cancer care who work together to decide the best treatment plan. The MDT can include medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and spinal surgical oncologists. Other specialists may be a part of the board as well. The members of the MDT provide diverse perspectives that help to deliver the best care possible to patients on the care pathway.

Consultants maintain a level of competence commensurate with participating in a comprehensive spinal on-call service; including decompression and stabilisation for spinal cord and cauda equina compression, and support to paediatric neurosurgeons for instrumentation in children. The department is recognized as a super-regional centre for paediatric deformity, oncology (in particular for primary spinal tumours), undertaking reconstructive surgery, and the full range of degenerative conditions.

You will find the detailed Job description and main responsibilities attached.

Applicants should apply on-line at www.jobs.nhs.uk. Please note a Disclosure Barring Service application will be required for this post.
