The Institute of Resilient Health Systems (IRHS) is a research partnership between four equal founding partners: the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in the United Kingdom, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Kenya, the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme in Malawi, and the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Research (Ce SHHAR) in Zimbabwe. The Institute’s vision is resilient health systems worldwide.
We are seeking a Lecturer or PDRA who will support the IRHS in acquiring and delivering innovative research on health system resilience pre-, during and post-shocks (climate change-related natural disasters, epidemics, and other shocks). Candidates should have demonstratable expertise in health systems research. We are particularly interested in, but not limited to, candidates with expertise in strengthening health information systems, health financing, evidence synthesis, evaluation of complex interventions and experience in multi-sectoral collaboration. This is a 2-year strategic faculty position across two departments: the Department of Clinical Sciences and the Department of International Public Health.
The post holder is to be based in Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe or the UK, starting as soon as possible.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Collaborate with the IRHS team to shape and advance the Institute’s research agenda on health system resilience.
  • Develop and co-develop grant proposals, study protocols, and data collection tools, ensuring ethical compliance.
  • Provide technical input to partners in low- and middle-income countries for data collection, analysis, report writing, and quality assurance.
  • Lead the publication and dissemination of research findings in academic journals and through strategic communication efforts.
  • Contribute to research planning, teaching, and the development of personal research interests within the LSTM framework.
The successful candidate will possess:
  • Ph D in health or health-related social science discipline including a research skills component.
  • Good understanding of health issues, services and health systems in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Experience designing research, applying for ethical approval, carrying out data collection field work and analysis of data sets - in low and middle-income countries.
  • Track record of academic publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience contributing to research grant writing and teaching.
  • Experience conducting robust literature reviews.
