Job Description

The Climate Desk at the New York Times is looking for a creative and collaborative journalist to join the Climate Forward newsletter team. You should have a track record of rigorous reporting that has helped to shape the conversation on climate. Evidence of crisp explanatory writing is a must, and experience with visual journalism is highly desired. You should have a body of work that shows broad intellectual curiosity, a sharp eye for data, and a command of complex and varied topics.
You should be well-versed in current research and policy, and have a growing circle of expert sources in the community of climate-focused researchers, policymakers, analysts and lawyers. You should have a vision for expanding the Climate Forward newsletter community, engaging readers and providing news and analysis in a conversational and accessible way. We want you to bring strong ideas about how to best cover the globe’s changing climate and its political, economic, technological and social consequences. You will report to the Climate Forward Editor.
Responsibilities:
  • Pitch, report, and write newsletter lead items
  • Pitch and report news items related to newsletter coverage (i.e. a news follow to a lead item)
  • Shape an area of reporting concentration and following news and enterprise opportunities
  • Summarize climate coverage published by the Times and elsewhere
  • Create paths to expand and engage the newsletter audience
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our
    value of journalistic independence
    and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 3 or more years of experience covering climate change or a related beat.
  • A portfolio that includes news, enterprise and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience writing in a clear, conversational style on complicated topics.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.
This position is represented by the News Guild of NY.
The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,049.64 and $125,000.00.
