What You Will Do

Do you enjoy engaging with the public and building relationships in local communities? If the answer is "yes" then we encourage you to learn more about our opening for a Community Outreach Specialist with a focus on K12 STEM education in the Community Partnerships Office (CPO). We are seeking a dynamic professional who has a passion for expanding science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in the state.

As a Community Outreach Specialist 1, you will coordinate and administer existing educational outreach programs to promote Laboratory corporate citizenship and community involvement with K-12 STEM education partners (leading the day-to-day program operations). Identify, develop, and administer new initiatives and programs to improve education. Execute a wide variety of community outreach and supporting events and activities including meetings, programs, workshops, trades shows, conferences, etc. in fulfillment of the Laboratory's community relations objectives. You will collect, analyze, and evaluate program data and prepare monthly and annual reports. You will be responsible for developing a range of strategic and tactical outreach activities with a focus on strengthening education in New Mexico though relationships within the education community. You will interact with students, parents, volunteers, community leaders, and the public as well as Laboratory employees and senior lab officials and will serve as an ambassador for the Laboratory in New Mexico. Represent the Laboratory on various statewide committees, boards and/or at meetings, conferences, and events.

Professional Knowledge

You will need demonstrated knowledge and understanding of education systems, policy and programs.

Outreach

Demonstrated knowledge of community constituents, public institutions to include educational institutions.

Communication

It is essential that you have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and build relationships with a variety of stakeholders. As well as the ability to work as a member of the team, provide advice and recommendations as a subject matter expert and take guidance and direction from more senior colleagues.

Technical Skills

You will need strong computer skills including Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, data management, and digital/virtual platforms.

Best Practices

You will also need a proven knowledge of industry best practices, polices, and procedures specifically relating to K-12 STEM education. Demonstrated involvement with K-12 STEM activities in rural and Title one schools is preferred.

Program Coordination

For this role you will need experience planning and administering an education program. You will also need experience using metrics to measure effectiveness of programs, and community outreach initiatives.

Organization Skills, Prioritization & Follow-Through

You will need to demonstrate advanced organizational skills, prioritize competing deadlines, and manage completion of multiple tasks, often under strict deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation; post graduate degree is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

Community Knowledge

It would be great if you have demonstrated knowledge of K-12 STEM education partners in New Mexico. Your experience and skills working in New Mexico schools or with culturally diverse populations will be a plus.

Technical Skills

Knowledge of science, computer languages, parallel computing topics, utilities, code performance, and other facets of a high-performance computing environment are an asset. Demonstrated experience helping educational partners solve technical problems is a plus.

Industry knowledge

Having experience coordinating programs for youth, in informal science education, and/or having experience as a classroom teacher holding a science endorsement will distinguish your application from others. As will demonstrated experience in scientific and/or computing research. Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Driving a vehicle, Speaking, Sitting, Standing, Typing, and Keyboarding

Work Environment: Domestic/foreign travel, Operation of motor vehicles

Work will occasionally be required outside of normal business hours and at off-site locations; and will require frequent travel, throughout New Mexico representing the Laboratory on various statewide, local and regional committees, boards and/or at meetings, conferences, and events. The place of work will be in an office setting at least 2-3 days a week in Santa Fe with frequent in-person meetings with partners. This is not a teleworking position.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
