The Controls Engineer II will provide expertise in the tooling design, validation and everyday support of production assembly tooling and automated equipment for the AST Center of Excellence. As a key member of the operations team the Controls Engineer II will help lead root cause analysis and equipment redesign efforts in or to improve manufacturing equipment reliability in support of overall business objectives. The Controls Engineer II will work under the direction of the Engineering Manager in a fast-paced collaborative environment supportive of program initiatives and compliant with company best practices and maximize the value of each product across the full product lifecycle.
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Evaluate failures based on established criteria and standards in order to determine root cause and failure points.

Redesign machine tooling and stations to eliminate failures and maximize reliability.

Act as subject matter expert when mechanical, electrical and automation controls design inputs are needed.

Evaluate, select, and order equipment that is most appropriate and cost effective for the manufacture of company products.

Participate in equipment factory acceptance test.

Support new equipment installation, modification, upgrade, and maintenance at the site.

Helps maintain up to date prints, drawings, and schematics of equipment.

Study equipment performance and reliability.
-
Establish programs and solutions for increasing uptime and efficiency for equipment.
-
Work with equipment support supervisor and equipment maintenance technicians to define and write preventative maintenance instructions and schedules.

Participate in Engineering meetings and Quality meetings.
-
Assist with the execution of validation protocols to support assembly equipment release for production.
-
Troubleshoot PLC’s, vision systems and data acquisition systems on new and existing production equipment.

Provide technical training and support to Maintenance and Manufacturing Engineering personnel in the operation and maintenance of automated assembly equipment.

Investigate and develop new controls technologies to continuously improve production operations.

Advise management of any unmitigated risks and/or developments that could adversely affect safety, quality, service, or cost.

Advise management of any unexploited opportunities and/or developments that could positively affect safety, quality, service, or cost.

Assist operations as a tactical support subject matter expert.

Identify and rectify issues and work with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, Maintenance, and IT will be a key component.

Travel to supplier sites as required.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
-
Bachelors degree required
-
Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience
Nice to Have
-
BS Electrical Engineering preferred
-
Significant electrical controls and automation design experience.
-
Proficiency in PLC (Allen Bradley), vision system (Cognex) and data acquisition system (Lab VIEW) programming and troubleshooting.
-
Knowledge in the application of machine motion controls, servo and pneumatic.
-
Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic and machine guarding safety standards.
-
Experience in equipment risk assessments and mitigation plans.
-
Experience in lean design and manufacturing.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of DFA, PFMEA, IQ and CQ.
-
Proven history of driving design, redesign and implementation in the development and commercialization of complex assemblies.

Project management skills

Communication and presentation skills
-
3D CAD (Solid Works, Auto CAD, Pro E or similar)
-
Candidate must be able to adapt quickly to change by refocusing efforts and adjusting priorities.

Must be able to work in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$79,200.00 - $118,800.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
