Environmental Scientist III - Waterfowl and Migratory Gamebird Biologist

Introduction

The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife manages 19 public wildlife areas — approximately 68,000 acres of land. In addition to providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, these lands provide hunting and other outdoor recreational opportunities.

Summary Statement

Position oversees Delaware’s waterfowl and other migratory gamebird populations through species-specific research and monitoring programs; conveys research findings through reports, presentations, and technical advice; and represents the Division on various state/regional committees. Position collects, analyzes, and presents harvest data; designs and implements research and management projects; and reviews and develops regulations concerning the management of migratory gamebirds in Delaware. Position assists with the development of annual budgets, grants, and contracts.

Preferred Qualification

Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete for this position if job requirements are met.

1. A Master’s degree or higher in wildlife biology or closely related field.
2. Three months experience conducting aerial surveys for wildlife.

Essential Functions

Conducts field studies or inspections and evaluations for compliance with permit and regulatory requirements; observes, collects, analyzes, reviews and interprets data from standard field studies, compliance inspections, various regulatory submissions or literature and makes recommendations.
Performs statistical analysis of data.
Conducts technical reviews and makes recommendations on permit applications or other various regulatory submissions to ensure compliance with regulations.
Prepares permits, technical reports and/or enforcement case documents.
Responds to technical/regulatory inquiries from other state, local and federal agencies as well as public and private organizations or individuals.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Environmental Scientist III
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.

Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.

Two years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.

Two years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.

Six months experience in technical report writing.
