Job Summary:
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is looking for a unique individual who will perform construction and maintenance work on electric transmission and distribution facilities. Works with, trains, and directs the work of the employees in lower classifications. Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs transmission, distribution, secondary and service systems. Installs, removes, maintains and inspects secondary lines, services, and meters.
Rate of Pay: $40.95 - 60.87 / hour. Rate of pay is determined by the current collective bargaining agreement and may include a step progression. Please provide your Certificate of Completion from an accredited Apprenticeship Program, and your work process hours & curriculum data, with your application.

KIUC has led utilities in the State of Hawaii in both reliability and renewable production for the past two years.

Position Responsibilities:

Performs transmission and distribution construction work on both energized and de-energized facilities.
Operates a service bucket truck in performing work requiring an aerial platform. Climbs poles as required in the performance of the job.
Conducts voltage, phase and load tests of lines. Checks condition of lines, transformers, and substation equipment for abnormal voltage, overloads, and before energizing.
Inspects conditions to determine location and apparent cause of trouble by testing for grounds, locating fallen trees or testing transformers.
Switches and parallels company and customer circuits, transmits clearance and de-energizes company and customer equipment for construction, maintenance or repairs.
Responds to trouble calls during and after normal working hours.
Restores service by making emergency or permanent repairs, and replacing fuses. Operates switches and cutouts to energize or de-energize circuits. Makes minor adjustments to operating equipment. Sets equipment controls as directed.
Installs overhead and underground secondary circuits and customer services. Installs, reads, and removes customer meters.
Inspects for adequate clearances between energized and de-energized equipment. Inspects condition of poles, crossarms, insulators, conductors and other plant equipment.
Installs, removes, and makes repairs to street lights.
Uses radio and phone to notify system control personnel of field status.
Trims trees and other vegetation as required to maintain clearances and protect company equipment. Locates and corrects causes of radio and television interference.
May be required to stand by substations during switching or trouble. Reads indicating and recording instruments and meters. Takes and records substation readings as directed.
Is responsible for the regular inspection of the company truck, equipment, and tools assigned to insure that proper and safe operating conditions are maintained.
Is responsible for completing all necessary reports and forms applicable to completion of a job.
Is responsible for the protection of the public while performing the duties of the job.
Applies company's construction and safety standards and other applicable rules and procedures.
Directs work of other assigned to him/her.
Performs all work required of any lower classification.
Performs similar and incidental duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

Must pass Edison Electric Institute (EEI) CAST test and other company administered tests.
Must have demonstrated leadership ability and the capability of accepting working instructions to direct assigned personnel.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Hawaii driver's license, class B (CDL).
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instruction in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Must occasionally lift, carry and/or move up to 75 pounds.
Required to walk, bend and reach with hands and arms, and climb utility poles.
Excellent communication and human relations skills to work and interact with internal and external customers in a professional and cooperative manner.
Proficient use of personal computer skills, preferably Microsoft Office applications.
Must be a graduate of KIUC's apprenticeship program or an accredited Apprenticeship Program.
