Duties

• Incumbent should have or quickly acquire the ability to provide effective education to patients and/or family members in relation to common disease processes, medication and/or treatment regimes.
• Acquire the ability to completely & confidently prepare, administer and appropriately document actions taken specific to commonly prescribed oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous, and/or intramuscular mediations, immunizations or skin tests as permitted by approved local facility policies and procedures.
• Acquire the ability to astutely observe and document a patient's response to medications administered and report any change in patients' condition to RN or MD/DO, as appropriate. Acquire the ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.

• Adheres to standards of practice and safe technique in preparation and administration of medications.
• Demonstrates understanding of age- and population-specific characteristics that affect the health care needs of the Veteran.
• Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance and effectively intervenes as directed and when appropriate.
• Based on the patient's goals, provides patient, family and caregiver health education, to include self management, prevention, and wellness.
