Department Description

The Non-CDL Driver will operate a passenger van/approved vehicle safely in transporting students and authorized personnel to and from schools/centers. Employees in this class are responsible for following an assigned route and schedule in the safe operation of a passenger van/approved vehicle. General supervision and training is received from the Lot Foreman, Assistant Foreman, and /or Driver Trainer. Employees in this class are prohibited from operating vehicles that require possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Hourly Range: $16.99 - $32.46

Detailed Description

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Operates a vehicle over an assigned route in transporting students to and from schools/centers;
Maintains order among students aboard and reports cases of misbehavior to school and staff officials through proper procedures;
Inspects vehicle and checks gas, oil, water and all lights, brakes, and safety equipment before driving; maintains cleanliness of vehicle (both inside and out);
Prepares reports of accidents and incidents, which occur;
Attends safety meetings and other meetings as necessary;
Prepares manifest reports as requested;
Keeps an up-to-date route sheet in the vehicle at all times;
Keeps required handbooks in the vehicle at all times;
Serves as a Transportation Attendant as needed; and
Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Good knowledge of driving safety and courtesy;
Good knowledge of the operation of automobiles and passenger vans;
Good knowledge of the local streets and road system;
Good knowledge of state regulations and laws pertaining to the operation of vehicles;
Good knowledge of motor vehicle laws and regulations of the State Board of Education;
Some knowledge of first aid;
Ability to deal patiently and effectively with students;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; and
Ability to communicate effectively with Transportation department staff, school administrators, community members, students, and appropriate PGCPS staff.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Individuals transporting students must have at least three (3) years of driving experience and have attained the minimum age of twenty-one (21) years.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid Driver's License with no more than two (2) current points.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, see, and drive. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, lift, pull, push, grasp, climb, balance, and conduct repetitive wrist and/or hand movements. Employee must have the ability to sit in the vehicle driver seat, reach the steering wheel and grasp with both hands, reach the pedals, and wear a seat belt properly. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. and/or 100 lbs. when operating a wheelchair lift and assisting a special-needs student.
