Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

Incumbent works in a centralized service center directing and evaluating the daily work of Authorization Coordinators to ensure timely and customer-focused service to patients seeking to obtain medical services at UCIMC. Monitors the operations of a unit and works collaboratively with peers to ensure department goals are met and policies and procedures are followed. Fills in for and works as an Authorization Coordinator as requested or needed.

Required Qualifications:

Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
Minimum 3 years’ experience working as an Authorization Coordinator in a clinic or hospital
Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT / HCPCS Medical Coding
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Excellent organizational and planning skills and ability to manage multiple activities and varied deadlines
Demonstrated leadership skills to supervise and motivate staff
Demonstrated experience and thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and database applications
Demonstrated ability to interpret health plan benefit packages and make benefit determinations
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Ability to act independently to solve problems and develop recommendations for approval

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong knowledge of UCI and outside payor authorization and scheduling policies and processes
Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements
Experience working in a UC and/or union environment
Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or Vietnamese
