Reading Tutor

Positions are available throughout Floyd, Knott, Leslie, Perry, and Hazard Independent School districts!
Essential Functions
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students using curriculum and intervention resources provided by Reading Corps.
  • Assist children to improve their reading skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations.
  • Provide opportunities for family literacy involvement for Reading Corps students, including implementing semi-annual community family literacy events at workshops at assigned service site.
  • Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule for students to allow for approximately 21-25 children to receive daily 30-minute reading tutoring sessions.
  • Identify students who qualify for tutoring services with direction from site supervisor and Reading Corps program staff based on Reading Corps-adopted assessment and screening practices.
  • Act on feedback and coaching from site supervisor and Reading Corps program staff.
  • Assess, with a high level of accuracy, students’ continual progress through progress monitoring and benchmarking.
  • Document students’ attendance, progress, scores, and interventions using an online database system.
  • Regularly review student data with site supervisor and program staff to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by your start date.
Communication
  • Communicate with students in an age and developmentally appropriate way.
  • Professionally communicate with colleagues, program staff, and school staff regarding student schedules, Reading Corps interventions and student progress.
  • Act on constructive feedback provided by site supervisor and program staff.
  • Build professional relationships with school staff to maintain good communication and ensure the integrity of the program.
  • Fulfill program requirements and daily read and respond to email communications from Serve Kentucky, program staff, and school personnel.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all student records and test scores.
  • Submit required reports and student impact reports in the America Learns system during the program year.
Secondary Functions
  • Perform assignments and/or duties as assigned by program staff which may include attending school-sponsored trainings, meetings or other activities (i.e. family night, book fairs, etc.). Members may not perform assignments or activities which would displace school staff according to 45 CFR § 2540.100 (such as lunch or bus duty) or other activities prohibited by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 45 CFR § 2520.65.
  • Participate in school or district after school programming with a priority on tutoring.
  • Participate in mid-year and end-of-year member evaluations with site supervisor and/or program director.
  • Participate in civic engagement activities and community service projects.
  • Participate in Reading Corps outreach activities.
  • Create and implement an individual professional development plan that includes goal setting.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by your start date.
  • Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Must pass mandatory CNCS, Serve Kentucky, and Hindman Settlement School background checks.
  • Must not have served 4 or more terms of service previously with a state or national Ameri Corps program.
  • Speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Interest in education, specifically helping children develop early language and literacy skills.
  • Dedication to community service.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional.
  • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.
  • Excellent time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging, high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to perform limited amounts of physical/manual labor (i.e., lift up to 20 pounds).
  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics and integrity.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $19,110.00 per year
Expected hours: 40 per week
