A Brief Overview
The Vascular Access Registered Nurse (RN) provides consultation and treatment for placement of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC), midline catheters, and ultrasound guided peripheral IVs, practicing in an evidence-based manner, within the Scope of Practice of the California Nursing Practice Act, regulatory requirements, standards of care, and hospital policies. The Vascular Access RN performs the appropriate steps in providing consultation and assessment of the patient in placement of specialized IV accesses to include: assessing the patient, interpreting applicable data, providing requested treatment, and collaborating with the patient, nursing staff, and provider. Additionally, the Vascular Access RN coordinates care with other providers and acts as a teacher to the patient and family to provide the knowledge and skills needed to manage their central lines and prevent associated complications.The vascular access RN is responsible for assessing and inserting the appropriate vascular access for patients who are unable to maintain a peripheral IV (PIV) or require long-term therapy not accomplished by a PIV.

What you will do
- Assess patients with difficult access or need for long term IV therapy for appropriate vascular access device.
- Works with staff nurses, physicians, case managers, and other team members to insure early assessment for VAD selection and implementation
- Participates in education with Vascular Access education with patient, family members, and staff
- Reviews physicians order
- Obtains consent
- Reviews medical records for any contraindication of peripheral vascular access
- Determine the best vascular access device for the patient based on medications, current access status, diagnoses, length of IV therapy, etc.
- Places Vascular access device, (PICC, Midline, or ultrasound guided peripheral IV) or recommends alternate means of access
- Reports directly to patient’s primary nurse and charge nurse or physician, if necessary
- Troubleshoots difficult complications of VAD’s or assists staff in troubleshooting
- Declots VAD’s or assists staff as a resource in declotting
- Is responsible for all central line dressing changes on a weekly cadence
- Documents completely and accurately in the patient’s permanent medical record
- Evaluates effectiveness of interventions and monitors patient for adverse responses and side effects.
- Assesses patient/family level of understanding and documents information on clinical records.
- Creates and maintains a climate conducive to healing through being present to patient & family, identifying and managing discomforts and providing emotional support and education.
- Teaches needed information for self-care and illness prevention to patient and family members.
- Recognizes and communicates to proper authority ethical and legal issues relative to patient care; completes incident report.
- Safety performs all provision of care for any age-related needs of the patients served on the unit, including growth and development principles
- Attends meetings and serves on departmental and/or hospital committees as assigned.
- Works to support the achievement of department strategic and organizational goals.

Education Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) Preferred
- Successfully completed theoretical course with Didactic and supervised practicum Required
Experience Qualifications
- 2+ years to 3 years prior acute care Registered Nurse experience Required
- 1+ year to 2 years of experience or more caring for patient with central venous access devices Required
- Competency in the placement of vascular access devices Required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication skills - Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

- Knowledge of principles, practices and current trends in health care and hospital system organization and administration sufficient to provide clinical management, leadership, coordination, and operational direction for assigned areas of responsibility
Licenses and Certifications
- Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers required .
- Nursing\RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure required .
- VABC - Vascular Access Board Certified required within 1 Year
