October 3, 2024
Description
External and Corporate Relations Vice-Presidency (ECR)
The mission of External and Corporate Relations (ECR) is to help deliver financial and political support for the World Bank Group, strengthen the Bank Group’s role as a global thought leader in development by enhancing and safeguarding its reputation, and supporting operational teams to achieve country outcomes. ECR manages corporate communications and global engagement with key stakeholders, including media, civil society, foundations, private sector, donor countries, and international organizations, as well as employee engagement. ECR also manages strategic communications for the World Bank’s Regions and Global Practices and leads the management of reputation risk.
The East Asia Pacific External and Corporate Relations Unit (ECREA)
The East Asia and Pacific region remains one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regions in the world. Over the past two decades, most countries in the region have achieved strong and stable growth that has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and transformed economies across the region. Many East Asia and Pacific countries have risen to upper-middle income status and have set the goal of reaching high-income status in the near to medium term. The East Asia and Pacific region includes 23 countries and 6 Country Management Units.
Vietnam has been a development success story. Economic reforms since the launch of Đổi Mới in 1986, coupled with beneficial global trends, have helped propel Vietnam from being one of the world’s poorest nations to a middle-income economy in one generation. GDP per capita increased 6-fold in less than 40 years, from less than $600 per person in 1986 to almost US$3,700 (constant 2015 US$). Vietnam has grown bolder in its development aspirations, aiming to become a high-income country by 2045. To achieve this goal, the economy would have to grow at an annual average rate of about six percent per capita for the next 25 years. Viet Nam also aims to grow in a greener, more inclusive way.
Cambodia experienced rapid economic growth in the decades before COVID-19, driven by tourism, manufacturing, and construction. However, the pandemic severely impacted the economy, reversing years of progress in poverty reduction. While the economy is gradually recovering, challenges persist, including high poverty rates, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of human capital. To achieve its goal of becoming an upper middle-income country, Cambodia requires significant investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, along with policy reforms to foster inclusive growth and diversify its economy.
