In 2024 Hunter New England Local Health District will be opening baiyangbaiyaang Awabakal translation for “Butterfly the one who flutters” a statewide, comprehensive eating disorder treatment service comprising of a residential eating disorders centre (REDC) located in Charlestown and an Eating Disorder Day Program (EDDP) located in Newcastle.

About the Role
The Senior Aboriginal Mental Health & Social Emotional Wellbeing Clinician will be a member of the senior clinical care coordination team who will work closely with the manager to provide leadership and governance. The role will ensure cultural sensitivity, traditional healing methodology and connectedness to country are incorporated into service development and delivery. This will include:
  • Comprehensive and collaborative direct client care including delivering traditional healing activities and culturally sensitive, recovery-oriented wellbeing care plans for people with eating disorders.
  • Designing, delivering and evaluating cultural healing and interventions for people with eating disorders
  • Collaborating with relevant Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations, Elders Groups and Aboriginal community members across NSW to facilitate appropriate care pathways for Aboriginal people with eating disorders and their carers/families.
  • Motivate and engage non-Aboriginal staff to embrace change and undertake traditional healing initiatives
  • Providing support and supervision to less experienced baiyanbaiyaang staff and consultation/engagement with broader HNE MH Aboriginal workforce.
The Support
The successful candidate will attend daily intake & cultural safety huddles with the YAMHS team which is operationally managed by an Aboriginal service manager and be provided with clinical and cultural support to meet social, emotional, Cultural, spiritual and physical wellbeing needs. There will also be access to regular clinical supervision, ongoing education and professional development relevant to the role.

Where you'll be working
This 12 bed, brand new, purpose- built facility will provide an innovative model of care for people 16 years and over, with an eating disorder in a homelike environment. A skilled multidisciplinary team will provide an intensive program of individual and group interventions, using a rehabilitation framework. Interventions will focus on specialist treatment for eating disorders together with addressing psychosocial disruption and overall quality of life.
About EDDP: This service offers a group therapy program 4 days per week and is designed as an adjunct to ongoing care. Clients benefit from meal support at breakfast, morning tea and lunch as well as education and skills-based groups supporting clients to tackle challenges and build a life worth living.

baiyangbaiyaang, a statewide service, will be required to operate in conjunction with existing specialised tertiary services, with a broad range of stakeholders, both in public and private sectors. Operationally it will sit within Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

About You
This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Aboriginal Mental Health & Social Emotional Wellbeing Clinician, has extensive experience working with people with an eating disorder and/or with complex mental health disorder has a passion for being an integral member of a dynamic multidisciplinary team in the development of a new and innovative service model.
You will be:
  • Experienced and competent in the treatment of eating disorders with exceptional interpersonal skills and a flexible approach.
  • As a team member, able to display warmth and compassion for others.
  • Passionate about improving services for people with an eating disorder.
  • Confident in delivering culturally sensitive healing alongside specialist patient centred and family inclusive clinical advice and care and able to establish this within the treatment setting
