About the team
In Analysis and Insights Division, we use data and research to build the evidence base for policy decision making. We work collaboratively with policy colleagues, industry, other departments, research firms and universities to identify the heart of an issue, research relevant data and information, and apply judgement to form insightful conclusions. We partner with other departments in the APS to build new data sets, cutting edge models, and lead best practice with regard to evidence based policy.We do all of this in a supportive and friendly environment, harnessing diversity across our teams, collaborating with policy areas and other agencies. Essential experience for the role:
- Experience undertaking projects in which you have developed targeted and relevant questions, gathered evidence or data, and delivered clear and insightful conclusions in a related field, such as (but not limited to) economics, sciences, humanities or engineering. A degree is not required, but would be advantageous.
- Previous experience in mentoring or managing staff to deliver quality work.
Other relevant work experience that will be viewed positively includes:
- Previous policy development experience in a public sector agency or department.
- Project management experience, including timetabling, monitoring and risk management.
- Technical skills in the areas of data analysis, modelling, graphical presentations.
- Producing strategic briefs, papers, meeting agendas, and effective communication materials.
- Private sector work experience in the resources, energy, technology and industrial sectors.
- A university level qualification in a related field (in particular economics, statistics, data analysis, science or humanities) is not essential, but is highly desirable.

What you will do
We are looking to fill Assistant Manager vacancies across two teams.The Sectoral Manufacturing Analysis team researches and models different manufacturing sectors and the potential impact of policies on sectoral investment, growth and the net zero transition.
The Strategic Projects team is being set up to undertake project-based research into different sectors across the broad range of issues faced by DISR. Our teams employ people with a range of backgrounds from science, policy, economics, humanities and data analysis. You will undertake and also lead staff undertaking projects to advise on industry conditions, forecast future developments, and estimate the impact of policies on real outcomes for businesses and the economy.
As an Assistant Manager in these teams, you will:
- Assist an Executive Level 2 Manager to manage a team and develop staff.
- Have direct supervisory responsibility for graduates or APS level staff.
- Work independently.
- Have project lead responsibilities, including negotiating the scope of works, assigning tasks, testing of methods and conclusions, drafting of results/communications, responsibility for quality of the work and findings.
- Contribute to management of the branch and division through working groups on corporate issues, such as inclusion or divisional planning.
- Work closely with other staff in the division and department.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
