Census Workforce Support Agent (APS3), Census Temporary Workforce
CONTRACT
October 16, 2024
- $41.79 per hour (inclusive of 25% loading plus 15.4% superannuation and allowances)
- Location : Canberra
- Temporary, casual positions, with variable working hours, including days, evenings and weekends
About the area
Every five years, the ABS counts every person and household in Australia. We call this the Census of Population and Housing (‘the Census’). The 2026 Census will be Australia’s 19th national Census.
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the story of how we are changing. Census data informs us about the economic, social, and cultural make-up of the country.
The Census will require a large geographically dispersed Temporary Workforce of approximately 35,000 employees. The Census Temporary Workforce Project is responsible for the recruitment, onboarding, training, and support of this workforce.
About the role
We are looking to fill several Census Workforce Support Agent (APS3) positions in the 2026 Census Temporary Workforce Project team. These roles will be based in operational contact centres and will enable a smooth, consistent, and positive experience for candidates and staff employed in the Census temporary workforce.
Agents will be responsible for providing high quality, frontline assistance which may include resolving queries relating to application support and providing technical and operational procedures to Census staff. They play a vital role in enabling Census operations. For many applicants, an agent will be the first representative they speak to, and for staff, frequently the first level of support.
The key duties and responsibilities of the Census Workforce Support Agent are to:
- ensure operations are conducted with the wellbeing and safety of your team front of mind
- provide exceptional service and support to clients through multiple communication channels
- understand and proactively respond to a wide range of customer enquiries
- follow operating procedures to achieving quality outcomes
- escalate issues in alignment with operating processes
- build and sustain positive relationships with team members and actively participate in teamwork and group activities
- develop and maintain relevant knowledge in relation to business operations
To be suitable for the role of Census Workforce Support Agent, you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience:
- customer-focused and committed to providing effective and responsive support
- good teamwork skills with an optimistic, flexible attitude which promotes a positive workplace culture
- good written, verbal and phone communication skills
- active listening skills
- troubleshooting and problems solving abilities
- Good attention to detail with accurate data entry skills
Due to the dynamic nature of Census Operations, operational business hours will fluctuate over the lifetime of this contract to enable the delivery of the test in 2025, and the 2026 Census.
Workforce Support Centres will initially operate Monday to Friday (7:30am AEST to 8:30pm AEST). During field operations, they will operate seven days a week, with extended hours from 7:30 am to 11:30 pm. The total hours of work will vary over the period of your employment, dependent on the available workload. It is expected that some days and weeks will be busier than others, and your work pattern will vary.
There is a certain amount of flexibility in the working hours, however you will be required to work a mix of weekdays and weekends during Census operations. There may be times where you could be asked to take on additional shifts, at short notice, due to operational needs.
How to apply
To apply, complete an online application form on the ABS e-recruitment system.
You will need to upload your current resume (maximum of 3 pages), provide referee details (please provide your current supervisor) and respond to the following:
Please provide examples of how you have demonstrated the skills and qualities required to undertake the responsibilities outlined in the selection criteria – in no more than 500 words.
