About Us
Western Sydney University is a vibrant, research-driven institution located in Australia’s most rapidly expanding and economically vital region. With 11 campuses in Sydney and additional locations in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Surabaya, Indonesia, as well as planned campuses in India, we are at the forefront of global education.
We proudly serve over 50,000 students, supported by approximately 3,500 staff, and are connected by a network of more than 200,000 alumni. Ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide, over 85% of our research is rated at World Standard or above. For two consecutive years (2022 and 2023), we have been recognised as the top university globally and in Australia for our commitment to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (THE University Impact Rankings).
The Opportunity
Western Sydney University is committed to providing proactive and responsive support to our students, addressing immediate, ongoing, and emerging issues. We are seeking a dedicated Counsellor to join our Counselling Service team, collaborating with our Senior Counsellor and Senior Manager, Counselling and Wellbeing, to deliver high-quality, student-focused services.
You will play an integral role in the strategic planning, development, and review of the Counselling Service, ensuring that all activities align with departmental strategies to enhance the overall student experience. This includes providing professional, individual, and group counselling across various platforms, managing critical incidents with timely interventions, and maintaining accurate client case files with consistent follow-ups.
The role also involves supporting staff with mental health training, developing educational programs, and offering specialist advice and advocacy to students. You will use technology to improve services, ensure compliance with privacy laws, and foster a positive workplace culture through collaboration and service quality.
About You
You hold a degree in Social Work or Psychology and are a registered member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) or the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). With at least five years of experience in providing counselling services within an organisational setting, you have developed a strong foundation in supporting diverse client needs.
Your experience extends to group work, educational roles, and integrating technology into these practices. You are skilled in designing, delivering, and evaluating counselling and training programs, utilising data and information to continuously improve your practice.
You have a deep understanding of the issues affecting university students, including mental health, cultural and ethnic diversity, sexual and religious preferences. Your ability to negotiate and resolve sensitive and complex issues is complemented by your flexible approach and eagerness to embrace change.
Your communication skills are exceptional—whether oral, interpersonal, or written—and you have a proven track record of liaising effectively with a wide range of people and organisations. You are also technologically adept, using various tools to enhance the delivery of counselling services.
Additionally, you excel in building and maintaining strong relationships with external bodies such as health, welfare, and educational agencies. You are adept at facilitating referrals to appropriate services and are committed to improving representation and support within the University.
Why Join Us?
We offer a supportive and forward-thinking environment where your expertise is valued, and your contributions will make a difference!
Joining our team comes with a range of exceptional benefits designed to support your well-being and professional growth:
- Competitive Remuneration: Higher Education Worker Level 8 - $130,740 to $145,135 p.a. (comprising base salary of $110,477 to $122,641 p.a., plus 17% Superannuation and Leave Loading).
